Software Recs on the Wiki

Recommended Posts

I don't know how many here have been able to have a look at the suggested organisation for (part of) the Shift Wiki (here).

I'm going to go ahead and start adding entries to the Software Recommendations for Shift Gnome section as I use Gnome. There are sections for recommending additional software for the KDE and Lite versions too.

I suggest that people follow the format noted here with the brightside example (keeping the pages in alphabetical order by program name and the links up the tree at the bottom):

Name of the software as a 'Level 2 Headline'

'Description' in bold

'Installation' in bold

'Works with:' in bold

It's just that one of the cool things for me with Linux has been, after the install, finding cool software to add to it. If people here posted the additional software they really liked, then this would expand to be a good resource for new users.

I am going to aim to put a new entry in once a day at least. :D

Also, you'll see in the 'Contents' section that there is a 'Customisation Tips' section. Maybe we could start adding those too. :D

Sounds good, James. Go ahead with your additions. If any of the team sees anything that need revision or updating, I am sure that they will pipe in ;) .

Thanks, Barney! I'll keep hammering away bit by bit, adding things daily.

I guess the idea behind having 'software recs' and 'customisation tips' and the like is that it helps new users to become a bit more engaged with Shift and to start personalising it in ways to make it more useful.

I'm totally with you and think that it is a great idea for beginners, as a great support system. That was / is one of the biggest pluses for Ubuntu......... their user based wiki to assist in many areas.

I agree that Ubuntu's site is quite good and has a lot of things we'd be 'duplicating' at some level (just as we are 'duplicating' to a large extent the Ubuntu distro). However, Shift aims to be different from Ubuntu and, if we always send people to Ubuntu's site, maybe new users will just figure, why don't I use Ubuntu instead?

If we want to build Shift's identity, it's not just at the level of theme/branding of the distro itself. It's the Neowin forums dedicated to Shift. It's the Shift Wiki. It's how we promote it and its special qualities in press releases. Etc.

It's actually not that hard to 'fill out' the Wiki with basic and advanced information. It just takes people adding a bit each day: a software recommendation here, a customisation tip there--or an idea for a new section. ;)
