Turok |General Discussion|

Recommended Posts

Thanks to proper GameFly Queue management, which I do as often as I can but it hardly ever works out, however for once it did, and I actually received my copy of Turok yesterday and started the SP Campaign and also hopped on MP for one round. I played SP for about 3-3.5 hours overall so far.

Very Initial Impressions

This is not an actual review (if it was it would be in the reviews section for starters), I may do that bur probably not as I do not think it will be worth my time, but so far the game is only okay to me, and at times it is downright bad.

What is incredibly off is the difficulty of certain areas. I know trying to strategically approach situations are part of the game, I read plenty about how you can approach different scenarios with different approaches, but the problem is the strategic approach almost NEVER actually works, and it winds up being a crazed shootout that could have been done right from the beginning. Even with that said it just seems incredibly hard at times, and I am playing it on Normal (not Easy which is one below). It just is incredibly, incredibly easy (knife kills are a joke they are so easy at times), to just frustratingly difficult (a bunch of Dinos and a bunch of soldiers is a mess, mainly because the dinos just surround you and there is nothing to do.)

Now you can put flares on Dinos to make them attack each other, which seems to work right only some of the time. There was an instance I agitated a Dinosaur by stabbing it in the tail, and it went running like a mad man and took out some soliders as it was running, which I thought was a cool touch. But they seem few and far in between where things like that actually work.

So initially, overall I have to say I am disappointed. The game just does not have a fluidity to it, when it could have been a very, very good game even, right now it is only coming off to me as mediocore. I played through a good 5-6 levels I am pretty sure, so not sure how far I am into the campaign, but already I am feeling like enough is enough, I have seen enough grass to last me a life time.

The other AMAZINGLY HUGE FLAW with this game is level design. It is very, very easy to get lost for 10 minutes trying to figure out where to go next, even with clicking left stick in to bring up your mission indicator. The problem with the jungle scene and the whole grass thing, is everything literally looks the same, and for example vines you are supposed to wind up climbing just do not stand out. Some may like not having their hand held, and honestly I am fine with it not being blatantly obvious, but when I have to look for more than 5 minutes on where to go next, and I have to do that several times already, something is wrong.

Again to reiterate, the difficulty is amazingly skewed, it goes from laughably easy (the 1st Achievement I got was Dino Hunter or something like that, where you get 50 knife kills) to frustratingly difficult.

In regards to MP, I predict no one will be playing in it 5 months times. It is standard fare to say the least, sure it is a novelty to have Dinos in the mix as well, but again, knife kills seem to easy to pull off, and the other weapons seem very ineffective on their own right minus the shotgun and some sticky grenade weapon. I did only play 1 match, so that is very, very initial impressions and I will give it another shot when people are on since the official release is today, but if you know me and my tastes, first impressions are everything, and I can say the MP is not going to hold up to the likes of a COD4 or Halo 03, in fact I would go as far as to say it is amauturish compared to those two games.

I am going to play the SP Campaign some more today after I watch the Giants Parade (was going to go but my dad is sick now), so if I do play some more I will chime back later with updated impressions.

So far I give it a 6-6.5/10

A very ambitious idea overall, I like the change of scenery compared to other FPS's (although Far Cry does the jungle much cooler minus the Dinos) and the only reason I am giving it some more time is I was a HUGE fan of the original Turok game. Huge. So I want this to be good. It really is just an experience that winds up only being fun half of the time so far, the other half of the time you are going through the motions and getting lost on top of that. Not really fun.

Seems to be a fair review (Y) - In line with what most of the industry are saying...

Fun shooter, but not deep, crappy story and poor AI. Most of them still say its fun though.

The original Turoks on the PC were great, but of course, my standards back then were a lot lower - Well to be fair, the whole gaming industry expected what we got back then, nowadays it's all about advanced graphics/AI/level design, ect.

We expect more from our games (Y) Turok seems to have fell short of expectations.

Dirty you put everything I saw from the demo into words.

I deleted the demo so quick because I got so frustrated. I would just wander into any area and just got swarmed by dinos from all sides with no tactical way to actually approach the situation.

After wandering around for 10 minutes I realized the freaking caves look exactly the same so I'm glad I never had to deal with the jungle like you mentioned.

I played the demo up until I got to the jungle part. I got so lost that I didn't want to bother playing it anymore. A real shame, too. I mean, how can you screw up a game with guns and dinosaurs?

*remembers Dino Crisis 3*

Er, never mind.

I also think Turok was very lacking. It was fun for about 10 minutes, but once I got over the fact I could knife a dinosaur it got old quickly.

would've been a bit more fun if you could maybe hack the dinos up a bit, and they should of added a bit more variety to the vegetation, increased the movement of trees and stuff, stronger hdr (was there even any decent lighting in the demo? ) also some ambient jungle noises, don't remember them in the demo either. weapons could've of been more powerful.

  • 5 months later...
I played the demo... deleted it immediately after. Not going to buy/rent.

Sorry to bump this but yeah I just got the game (well a week ago!) and I liked it at first but now I really loathe it, its fun to walk around and shoot and kill dinos with the knife but that after 10 minutes is really tedious.

I really got into the game, didn't have any complaints, though I am not that picky with games. I did though play it on PC. I enjoyed the whole thing, killing dinos!!
