Ironman273
Some Totally Hatin' on PlayStation Home We're pretty excited about PlayStation Home. Theoretically, it sounds cool, and we are keen to see how it plays out. But that's us. What does Japan think? Dunno! We do know what readers of Japanese game mag Famitsu think and they're hating on it. In the most recent issue of the mag, the question was "What do you think about member services like PlayStation Home?" Here's the breakdown: ? 27.3 percent are interested in trying it out ? 37.3 percent don't care ? 35.4 percent dislike such services Yikes! Quotes to drive home the hatorade after the jump: Says a high school student: "I won't allow myself to be trapped in some fake reality." A 22-year-old college student: "It just doesn't look like it'd be fun as a game." A 24-year-old company guy says "It's more fun to enjoy myself in the real world." Keep in mind that thFamitsusu readers only, and there are some who are excited about Home. Somewhere. Source I don't know why, I just thought Japan would really like Ho:/... :/
Impact
That's hillarious! Just makes me all the happier that I didn't get a PS3, as it doesn't look that cool to me either.
shakey
smart thinker. why would i want to waste like 3 minutes having to run to my achievements or movie place instead of just clicking a button. dont care how it looks, if it isnt instant in these times, it usually wont cut it. Xerxes
The coments are funny. I'm actually more interested in how it will cope in the "real world", right now it's under controlled conditions and with limited amount of people using it. What will happen once the flood gates open? I get the feeling it will get overcrowed very quickly (and lag could become an issue as a direct result) and end up been full of brats and general trouble makers making it an unpleasent experience for all. This happened to me back in the days of Diablo 2, I was a online beta tester for that and during the test it was fantastic, no lag (and I was on dial-up at the time!) most of the people online were pretty pleasent. Then once the flood gates opened and the game was open to all, it was laggy as hell and full of people just out to ruin everyone elses time. Still I have to admit I've had pretty positive experiences on Halo 2, Halo 2 Vista and Halo 3 on Live so there is still a chance Home could be relatively pleasent experience still. EnzoFX
I think that reader was severely misinformed, again, Home is not a replacement for Life. It is not sony's attempt at second life.
Ironman273
I think that reader was severely misinformed, again, Home is not a replacement for Life. It is not sony's attempt at second life. If it were one or two people saying that I could understand, but that's 2/3 of Famitsu readers that answered the poll that said they weren't interested in Home. EnzoFX
^True, but then sony needs to really introduce Home well, really educate people about it, of course, in an entertaining, eye-catching way. A lot of people just don't get it, and everyone states to wait until it comes out. Granted it's still in beta, but they better have a good campaign towards release. Neo003
That's where we all are right now a fantasy world, and if Home become hit in US and fails in Japan that will prove my point. I truly agree with all the comment made by those readers, I mean if you want to watch a movie select it, watch it and get on with your life rather than starting a game going around looking at all the billboards in the game and finally finding the one you want. Xilo
Japan didn't really catch onto mmo's either though... Did they? A lot of them play Final Fantasy XI that's for sure. Most MMO games are American (at least the big budget well known ones). Western games generally don't do that well over in Japan. There are a lot of other MMO games that exist in Japan and Asia that are played. Most of them suck though.
Ironman273
Something else of note: if Home is supposed to wow people and make them want to buy the PS3, the Japanese market is where it needs the least help.

+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted February 7, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted February 7, 2008 (edited) I think the majority are undecided as we have still to see the veil uncovered from Home. Every month or so we get a new screenshot showing major changes/a new building appears but with Sony being tight lipped speculation is running rampant - That fuels hype and demand, but it also puts off a lot of people with uncertainty. They (Sony) need to open up at GDC or soon and tell us exactly what is in Home just now and what their roadmap looks like for 08 in terms of content. A release date confirmation wouldn't hurt either - For open beta and release :p But I do expect an open beta will really be the "release", and all Sony will do come a point they're happy is say right this is the first non-beta version. Just like Gmail, which is still in beta yet is practically complete and everyone can get an account. If you don't read into the speculation about what Home may contain, I can understand where people come from when they say it just looks like something you "run about in for 5 minutes". On first glances it can look like anything, even some sorta of date simulator  Home won't "fail" though, i'd bet heavily on it being a success in terms of a revenue stream for Sony and a "oh wow look something new" from the gaming community. It may not be everyones cup of tea, but it attacks areas proven to be very popular - Socialising/Role playing/Custimisation/Virtual reality represented in a human-like form and it will hopefully bring things Sony lack that other consoles do well - Matchmaking/Gamerscores & Achievements and DLC content (from movies/videos to furniture). For those who are heavily into the whole mysace/facebook and online communties you don't even need to want to play game(s) to jump into Home and spend time doing things - An area of the casual market Sony will hope to attack. chaos mage
I admit I'm no Sony fan, but I had to laugh when Home was announced. It seemed like a pretty big waste of time and money. A 'look what we can do!' gesture, basically. Was a good time to go back to sleep.

Might be a waste of time for you, that's fair, but a waste of money? Far from it. It's a cash cow for Sony between advertising and micro-transactions, but the good thing is you don't need to spend any money if you don't want. Especially if Sony get a vritual "mall" where real retail goods can be purchased within Home. So unlike XBL which gets heat since you HAVE to pay (and are still subject to advertising), Home can rake in money without much complaint, as if you're going to complain about micro-transactions/advertising you'll just be reminded at the core, you haven't paid squat. chaos mage
To me, yes it is. Since I could do pretty much everything I need to from any other system, a 3d environment would just introduce more delay in actually having or doing whatever it is I wanted. Anything getting between me and what I want (legally) is bad. I really don't care what Sony gets out of it.
