Theming

Recommended Posts

Not to step on anyones toes here, but I have been talking with MrEggsalad about this...

To put it bluntly, the current theme isn't working. Linux is not ready for a dark theme, and it's not Linux's fault. The problem is programs that presume black text is safe to use, and several other things. I think that we need to go back to something a bit more generic, unfortunately. I'm not sure what it is, but this thread is here for discussion of it. We should bring it up at the meeting tomorrow if we gather enough information today.

So, does anyone else agree/disagree/have an opinion/idea?

Actually I think you are right to be cautious there. I think of the darklooks theme you can download via synaptic on Ubuntu (notice that it is NOT included in the default set with Ubuntu--probably for the reasons you mention). It looks cool but there are times, like in Firefox with text boxes, where you can't see the text.

You and MrEggSalad are, IMO, definitely right about the assumption of a light background/dark text thing in unexpected corners. I received a Word doc from someone that had all the text marked as black and this was back when I was using darklooks: I had to highlight everything to see it... and then change text colour.

Even if you control all the Shift theme aspects on the system, you may find that light/dark assumption on others' parts coming back to haunt. It seems there is no way around this problem.

Honestly I think the Shift theme looks COOL. But maybe it could look cool in a lighter variation and avoid those issues. And you know every time one of those issues comes up with new users, they are likely to think 'this is just not professional' or something like that or worse.

Nice thought, Simon. The problems that I've seen with really "light" versions (IMHO) is that they look a bit too cartoonish. If we could create a "lighter" version with the blue/green Shift colors and some "knock-em dead" icons, we could pull it off.

Let's discuss this at our IRC meeting today.

Take a look at the Kemikal theme lassekongo has just released:

Imho, this is a beautiful theme, and coincidentally uses some of the Shift colour scheme. :shifty: :p

It looks quite nice, but I think we do have the resources to make something even nicer in-house ;)

As I've promissed I'll upload a sample of possible future design directions for Shift . I have discussed with graphic leaders and found out that glossy is not exacly a good-point of start . I'm also curious then what people really want from Shift edition (related to interface for sure) .

So here it is . Haven't worked for specific icons/buttons , these have been larged for a quick impression .. just for information .

I like this. Very nice. Though personally, I tire quickly of glossy themes and tend to go for those with flat colours. This will certainly make an initial impact, which is probably a good thing.
