What Happened To Neowin

Recommended Posts

I use to visit this site everyday and look at the software section and there was something new or up to date to download or try. Neowin seems days behind everything now. Even weeks. Majorgeeks has more updated info. Whats going on?

I agree. I used to get a lot of my tech news here from the main page, but, lately, I've had to go elsewhere for the most up to date stuff.

Doesn't really bother me that much, though. The forum community is the real reason I visit :D

I agree, it's getting more orientated towards life issues, jokes and unrelated social concerns. I have an issue with tech, I get my answers here before, now, it just get ignored.

We used to have someone on staff to deal with software news (program updates and that sort of thing) but that position is currently vacant. If you know of something new and exciting then use the submit news feature on the front page.

Within the last few days I have been posting some articles on the main page. I could put more stuff on there but I don't want marginal quality items pushing the good stuff too far down the page. One can drown in tech news if one isn't somewhat choosy. Again, if you know of something then submit it.

that doesn't cover the situation where you don't know about a software release so you can't submit it. the OP's concern is that he was using Neowin to stay informed..now he has to go elsewhere for that.

The News Staffer who did software news isn't on staff anymore.

I am surprised the role hasn't been filled but saying that noticed alot of news staff disapearing lately :(

what sort of software updates are we talking about? is it only major ones like new release info for Office/Windows/etc (things that aren't released a lot) or things like apache/mysql (lots of releases with little changes)?

Not that anyone noticed the gaming news guy was gone also :( (except a certain other former news guy who shall remain a nameless slime)

Hard to believe this is my first post here since like, Dec. 12th or something. Yikes.

Whatever our members would find interesting. Whatever solves the balance between flooding the software page and leaving it languishing for hours. It takes some trial and error to find the balance. Take a look at the software tab and you'll get a basic idea.

One of the issues that creep up is that we ask newsies to post 5-7 items each week and that can be a problem for some (while others could do it in one afternoon).

I usually just read the forums, I tend to find the news I need on them anyway.

Occassionaly I read the front page though (Y)

Updates can be slow from time to time, im sure for those who read the front pages, things will pickup.

And some could do both at the same time (but not at the same point in...time...) :D

I didn't realise you had retired, every news staff I see on the board are now retired :|

I didn't retire, long story though.

And don't worry about not realising I had been taken off staff - not many people ever noticed my news posts to begin with :p

That was probably down to the fact I don't know every ones real names :p

so how do you apply for this vacant position?

We'll I'd start by using the Submit News feature. I was doing that until fairly recently.

Then you could speak to Shane Pitman. He's the top News Editor.

Actually, there still is a pinned thread on the top of BPN with full instructions:

I noticed this also, and seen the mods posting news a lot recently, which is great to see them doing more than just being a mod, you don't see that in a lot of places. I hope Neowin isn't on a downward spiral. I think there just needs to be more dedicated people willing to help out with the additions to the site, like more newsposters, review users for products and applications to gear it up.

Also, another thing bothering me recently is the news I see posted on the main page, there isn't a source anymore, or rarely, what's going on!

I don't mind writing, indeed my best strength is writing and composing, but time is a luxury I do not have at the moment, what with my father's surgery and all. Then again, that will all be over soon. I've written reviews before for my school/college magazine and even here if I recall, even a guide as well. The only thing I'm not good at is getting up to date news, hence why I refrain from posting in BPN  !

I'll see how this turns out but I do agree software news is a little bit behind.
