PlayStation 3 sells 1 million units in UK

Recommended Posts

Sony has confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that the PlayStation 3 has sold over one million units in the UK.

The console was released in the UK on March 23 last year, meaning it has reached the milestone quicker than the PlayStation 2, which took 50 weeks to sell one million units.

Sony announced back in June 2007 that sales had hit the one million mark across the whole of Europe in just nine and a half weeks.

With sales of the most expensive home console reaching important milestones for Sony, publishers are becoming more confident in the format.

Last week, Electronic Arts stated that it expects the PS3 to outsell the Xbox 360 this year, clocking up between 5 and 6 million units in Europe and up to another 5.5 million units in North America.

Nintendo's Wii reached the one million mark in the UK within 38 weeks on sale, making it the fastest-selling home console in the region.

Microsoft's Xbox 360 sold one million units within 60 weeks.

we have any data to compare this with the number of sales of the PS1 and PS2 in the same amount of time ?

Well from the article it states that the PS2 took 50 weeks to reach the 1million mark.

And you can also see how the 360/Wii did at achieving the milestone.

And I am sure Google can point you towards how quickly the PS1 reached 1million in sales.

Supposedly it has also been outselling the 360 in the UK for the past month as well now...

ChartTrack has also revealed that the Sony console has been outselling 360 for the last month. ?It has been outselling 360 for the last four weeks, but they were neck and neck over the Christmas period, weeks 49-52,? said ChartTrack director Dorian Bloch.

I can't wait to see what happens once MGS4 hits. I think it's the first large title out the door, yeah? Suppose GT5: Prologue might make a dent in America/Europe as well!

That's good news for Sony, but I'm going to have to go ahead and disagree with EA. I seriously doubt it'll rack up 5 or 6 times as much in the next year in the UK as it did the previous. It would be an astonishing feat, to be sure, but I think realistically, that's not going to happen. I can easily see 6 million in N. America, though, so long as the killer apps push consoles as hard as everyone thinks they will. I don't yet think Blu-ray is going to go prime this year (despite being the victor over HDDVD), so I don't think that will be much of a factor in sales.

nice to see some serious competition going on lol. Can only be good for the industry. I just hope this success their having doesn't make them overconfident like they were when the PS3 launched (the whole people will buy it without any games thing).

The PS3 is *not* more reliable than the 360, not anymore anyway. The newer revisions of the console are pretty rock solid now (Y)

I really can't see the PS3 outselling the xbox though, at least not in software titles. It just fails as a gaming machine. However it does do blu ray very good, so perhaps hardware wise it might outsell it due to the sheer amount of people buying it just for that feature.

When you look at the average reliability, the PS3 has <1% failure rate whereas the X360 has been anything <30% failure rate. There are now good games for the PS3 and the future seems bright.

Except that many people still have the units which could crap out at anytime (and they will)...and the newer revisions haven't been out long enough to confidently say they're "rock solid".

Until they're backwards compatible with PS2 games, I'm not buying one. It's the only thing keeping me from going for it.

Think you missed the boat, BC was pretty good even on the semi emulated machines (EU 60gb and US 80gb)

rumour has it that there will be a completely software based emulator released for the 40gb models

Ye, I thought so too - until my friends' newly bought hdmi-x360 scratched his GoW! (I hope mine doesnt crap out on me too..)

The X360 fails as hardware :p

I could very well see the PS3 outselling the X360, not in 2008 but at some point, due to it being a more known brand - at least where I live

Yeah my Brand New elite has started scratching my Bioshock disc. The Best feeling you get tho is when you look at the Ps3 and think glad I bought you.
