booboo
Heya, I was wondering, what modifications can i do to my PS3 (firmware, hacks etc) Not anything like add flashy lights. Thanks
+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted February 14, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted February 14, 2008 The PS3 has been a brick powerhouse in terms of being hacked so far. You can't install custom firmware. Only things you can do are legal.... Such as, 1) Install Linux and use software within it - Limited RSX access though, so VLC can run choppy. 2) Install your own hard drive 3) Play HD content downloaded on your PC 4) Stream music/movies/divx/xvid content from your PC through TVersity 4) Setup a PSP for remote game/media play 5) Remote play PS1 games to your PSP from PS3 6) Fold@Home :p So nothing really in terms of "modding" that you're probably looking at. The playstation blog has some more tips to do with things you can do - http://blog.us.playstation.com/2007/12/ Pretty standard things, but there just isn't any real mods out there yet. +Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted February 14, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted February 14, 2008 Will it ever happen, that is the question. Maybe/Probably but the difference between the PSP and the PS3 though is the PS3 is based on and totally relies on PSN/Online.... and soon, Home. If Sony can ban consoles like MS for mods/firmware, it puts off a lot of people - Who wants to buy 2 consoles? (well people will, but it's certainly a deterrent). booboo
Has anyone hacked the xbox? -im not really updated with the whole console shiz
shakey
hacking one of these newer consoles really isnt a good idea unless you have a spare. Without a spare, your just ruining the warranty, and making sure that the product will most likely be banned from the companies services. Wait till the systems are basically dirt cheap, and the new generation is out, then its time to mod. But modding a system that runs you almost 500 bucks, you would really be better off just buying a PC.
+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted February 14, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted February 14, 2008 Has anyone hacked the xbox?-im not really updated with the whole console shiz Xbox 1 has been modded completely - I think it has some good things to support media functionality ect. 360 has been modded, but the only purpose of the mod is to play copies/backups. Unlike PSP CFW where it adds a lot of another things besides ISO support.

SnowRanger13
Haha. Thanks guys, any others though? And Is there anyway to install windows on it ^_^ PS3 uses a PowerPC Processor while any version of Windows written recently was written for i386 (aka Intel) only). You can install Linux and then use a program to emulate i386 and run Windows in that, but it's slow and not worth it. Linux does not even have access to the PS3 GPU because we could do to many things that Sony fears (like copy games), so Linux on a PS3 is already limited at somethings. Not to mention emulation is slow. Trust me it's not worth it. Mac OS X is written for both i386 and PowerPC, it would take a fair bit of hacks to run and it would also be against Apples user agreement (aka Illegal to do). But if they got OS X to run on PS3 it would run at fairly good speeds.

booboo
OK. Thanks for clearing that up :) I reckon they will hack round the GPU prob eventually. I hope they do.
SnowRanger13
OK. Thanks for clearing that up :)I reckon they will hack round the GPU prob eventually. I hope they do. They have started and got pretty far, but then with the latest Firmware update Sony changed how the Hypervisor (the part that keeps you out of the GPU) works. Once GPU access is there you will start to see a lot of creative programs being written.

SnowRanger13
Yeah, what linux's will work on it? Any linux that is written for PowerPC. Yellow Dog Linux is the official PS3 linux. Ubuntu and Fedora Core are popular choices.
booboo
Do the cool effects work on the PS3, like you get if you install it on a normal pc (Cube, wobble etc)? Or not?
