Is there a way for Ubuntu to detect different monitors when starting?

Recommended Posts

I have a monitor that I use most of the time, but I would like to use my HDTV sometimes to watch DVDs. Is there a relatively simple way to have Ubuntu just 'detect' which monitor it's plugged into and get the right resolution and refresh rate without having to reconfigure the xserver every time?

Looks like this guy did something similar (switching between two diff configs) by having two different files, and a quick command (bound to keys) to switch between the two.
