Corris Veteran Posted February 21, 2008 Veteran Share Posted February 21, 2008 (edited) 45 minutes since it started, and from what I can see from game sites there's no live blogging going on, which means were going to a have to wait for it to finish completely and then for a write up on it. Hopefully something nice will come out of it, I have lost hope for a Home beta for the time being. :( n less than an hour PSU will be attending the "Home Tools and Support: Creating Content for PlayStation Home" presentation. Stay tuned to this feature as we'll update it with details and images from the show directly after the event.According to the GDC guide, this is the basic description of what will be shown during the presentation: "This presentation will cover a technical overview of the current Home Tools features and the feature roadmaps for the future. Additionally we shall walk through the developer process of creating a space for Home and show a guide to creating 3D mini-games within the Home environments. Wrapping up we shall take a sneak peak at technical requirements for Home Interactive Item creation." Stay Tuned. *Update (30mins into presentation) For a quick update, one key feature that the new PlayStation Home tools will allow for is the ability for developers to create custom clothing, furniture, and avatar heads for Home users. An example could be having an unlockable Sweet Tooth head from Twisted Metal for your Home character. Although, any heads created by developers will be static and will not be customizable by users. Other features shown include scene tools for creating private and public spaces and how to create a menu system for Home users to jump from Home into multiplayer games. Update #2 Developers will be allowed to create Home Interactive Items. The first item shown was something called a "Bubble Machine" which users can pull out using their in-game PSP menu and drop on the ground. Other items talked about included a virtual camera, tv remotes, and footballs. Developers can produce items to both sell or giveaway. Also items in the game can be interactive (such as the football which uses Home physics) and be picked up and dropped. Items can have animations, collision, and audio. (Developer shows images, inlcuding a scene with 20-30 Home users dancing with Bubble machines all around) Images and more details soon! +Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted February 21, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted February 21, 2008 (edited) Will Home ever come out? Hopefully the flak they get for a "poor" GDC will spur them on to do something soon. A lot of people are saying "GDC is for developers, blah blah" , "Sony's gamer day will be when we hear things..." However they showed a fair bit at GDC last year (LBP/Home for the first time). On that note, anyone know when Sonys Gamer Day is? It's an event by the way. I mean ok bubble machines will be fun, but Sony, we want the basics of Home/In-Game XMB first, not bubbles  Other screens, Edited February 22, 2008 by Audioboxer
troist
I haven't been staying massively up to date with Home, but by just looking at the stuff from GDC it looks like Second Life for the PS3? I thought it was going to be like a 3D interface? I could understand walking over to the pool table to play pool, but watching your character/avatar dance to a bubble machine? I hope Sony's improvements to PSN aren't just Home in the next year or so.

American Ninja
Just updated the main post with this: GDC 2008: More Warhawk DLC Incoming; Single-Player Later? :) Warhawk is not something Incognito is looking to turn away from anytime soon. Speaking with Dylan Jobe, game director for Warhawk, we learned that Warhawk will continue to be supported through a number of booster packs and is likely not the last we'll see of the franchise.Operation Broken Mirror is a booster pack that is confirmed for release in the future and will feature one new vehicle -- an APC that acts as a portable spawn point and equipment producer -- and a new battlefield. New game modes are also in the works, but they will not be a part of the booster pack. Instead, game modes will be released for free and integrated into patches and updates. But what about content beyond the plans we have heard about? "As long as the community exists and as long as there is an appetite for playing the game and new content, that's good for us and we want to try to do split deliveries -- you can always get free stuff and you always have to option to buy certain content," said Jobe. Basically Incognito is willing to support the game as long as the players are willing to make it worth their while. Single-player was dropped from the game, but that doesn't mean it won't ever happen. "We made a strategic decision to go multiplayer only and I would be against doing a set of single-player expansion packs for Warhawk," said Jobe, but, "if we look at doing single-player in the future [it would be] related to a new product." He also added that Incognito is interested in taking Warhawk beyond the current PS3 title, stating that, "if there is an opportunity that presents itself for us to further the franchise then we'll definitely take advantage of it." Single-player may or may not be in production, but it's good to know that Incognito is going to continue to support the awesome multiplayer that makes up the current iteration of Warhawk. w00t! :)

I'll post more on it when I get back home, but suffice to say, there now is no reason for any devs to ever not have a solid multiplatform game on the PS3. soniqstylz
^What are you doing in my house taking pictures of my TV!?!?!?! (that is a massive screen, isn't it? :p) Yeah, that's about 1/3 of the screen. The Sony booth itself seems kind of small overall, tho, for the size of the screen (and it's proximity to the door). About 8 PSP stations, 4 PS3 stations, and 8 or so screens to show off technology (Sixaxis, Phyre Engine, Phsysics using one single SPU, Unreal 3, some other stuff). Oh, and a couple of GT5: Prologue stations w/ the Logitech wheel ;) Gonna go to a talk by David Jaffe now. More to come later. Now that I have batteries for my regular camera (and the USB cord for it), I can take some proper pics and post 'em. Just gonna have to resize as well, and I'm lazy. Still can't find a "In-Shirt XMB" shirt, tho I did see someone with one on yesterday.

+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted February 23, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted February 23, 2008 GDC 2008: Final Fantasy UpdatesUS, February 22, 2008 - Taku Murata, General Manager of Square Enix's Research & Development division, just gave a presentation at this year's GDC titled "The Technology of Final Fantasy." Most of the information given at the conference was more on the technical side of things, dealing with the company's various engines and experiences with actual development. However, towards the end of the show, we were treated to a few bits of information that should be interesting to Final Fantasy fans. First, Square Enix's "White Engine," the companywide technology platform, has been renamed Crystal Tools (and is designed for use with the PS3, 360 and PC). Also, Murata mentioned that a scaled down version of Crystal Tools will be implemented for the Wii. Intriguing indeed. This technology is being implemented in the upcoming Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Soon after these details were given, an old trailer was promptly shown. It's been a while since we've seen a trailer from the upcoming Final Fantasy titles, but we'll break it down for you again. The trailer was for Final Fantasy XIII, and began with the now recognizable shots of a cybernetic train snaking through highly science-fiction inspired environments. The following flashed quickly, but it looks like a monster, reminiscent of series favorite Ifrit, runs down a highway environment and attacks Lightning, the game's blonde-haired main character. Using a series of highly stylized acrobatics and martial arts techniques, Lightning dispatches the monster with her sword (that seems to double as a gun). Another element that definitely intrigued us was a few scenes, both cinematically and in "real-time," that depict Lightning using some sort of time manipulation weapon. Casting her hand out to throw a grenade, a blue field exploded outwards and froze enemy soldiers in place, giving the agile warrior a few precise moments to take everyone down. More scenes of the twin Shiva-looking creatures were shown, mixing an appearance of magic and technology in a very cool way. Also, there was a large ship swooping down from a clustered sky, releasing platoons of armored troops that jetted down to the ground below. They clearly outnumber Lightning, who eyes the group quietly with a look of satisfied aggression. Before the troops open fire, a blonde man with a bandana rides a motorcycle into the scene, screeches to a halt and looks over his shoulder calmly. End trailer. After the old video, nothing overly important was noted, though we should mention that despite talk of cross-platform software, the trailer explicitly displays "For PlayStation 3" before cutting to black. This looks to continually insist the game's exclusivity for the Sony platform. Lastly, Murata noted that Crystal Tools will be used in conjunction with the development of a new MMO that Square Enix is working on. Whether this is an entirely new project or the previously mentioned MMO is uncertain. American Ninja
GDC 2008: Warhawk: Operation: Broken Mirror Hands-onWe enlist in part of Operation: Broken Mirror. by Jeff Haynes February 22, 2008 - It's well known that we're Warhawk fans, so any time we get a chance to check out updates for the game, we're ready to take to the skies. At GDC 2008, we were able to talk to Dylan Jobe via PlayStation Eye video chat, and also get a chance to run through the upcoming version 1.3 and Operation: Broken Mirror booster pack. Dylan pointed out that the key elements from his initial PlayStation Blog have been implemented. That means that new paint schemes and insignias from the Warhawk contest have been fully integrated into the game, along with a host of VOIP changes for players headed up by the ability to toggle between push to talk and open mic settings. Home integration has been coming along as well, so players will be able to pull out their virtual PSP and immediately create and launch into a game of Warhawk. Speaking of Home, Jobe mentioned that they would love to support trophies within Home, although if they are integrated into the game, he would like to see possible new trophies for Warhawk players aside from the standard rankings and rewards that players currently receive. Version 1.3 will also feature two new soldier weapons: the bio field generator to heal troops and the mechanics field wrench that can be used to heal vehicles. Finally, there are additional tweaks that will be made within Version 1.3, such as improving the effectiveness, damage, cooldown rates and other issues associated with the .50 cal guns that board members were griping about. The invisible tank glitch will also be addressed again, so players should no longer have that issue pop up in games. Apart from those tweaks, Dylan went on to describe the sneak preview of their upcoming booster pack, Operation: Broken Mirror. While the new level for the pack wasn't being shown, Dylan did stress that the new vehicle puts a new spin and twist to the gameplay that could have a larger impact on the game than the inclusion of the dropship. In Broken Mirror, Eucadian and Chernovan players will gain access to an APC that can seat six soldiers. These six soldiers can pop out of port holes akin to that on the tank and protect the vehicle when necessary. However, like the dropship, the APC is useful for more than simple transport missions. It can ram through just about any vehicle or emplacement (with the exception of tanks), instantly killing or destroying its target. It can deploy a electromagnetic bubble shield, which your troops can fire out of, but will neutralize incoming fire. It will also short out enemy vehicles and make aircraft critically fail if they come into contact with this shield, protecting ground troops from dive bombing attacks. What's more, the APC can be used as a mobile checkpoint, allowing players to spawn inside of an APC that's driving around the map. This means that you can potentially rejoin the fight on the battlefield without having to trek across some distance if a checkpoint is being fiercely fought over. But there's an additional plus to spawning inside the APC, which is that players will randomly receive one weapon that can be immediately used. So you could emerge from the vehicle you spawned into with binoculars, flame throwers or other items. While we weren't able to find out times for release for either Version 1.3 or Broken Mirror, we were able to confirm that version 1.3 will be a free update. Jobe suspected that Broken Mirror's price would be somewhat similar to that of Omega Dawn. What he did mention is that he'd love to see the balance for booster packs alternate between ground and air, and mentioned that he didn't see any naval booster packs ever entering into the picture because of the game mechanics. After we spoke to Jobe, we jumped into a quick team deathmatch mode which featured the new weapons and APCs. We found that even for their size, the APCs were easy to drive, and typically had a speed that was a little bit faster than that of the tank in normal motion. During the charge move, the speed increased significantly and lasted for a few seconds, but cornering or turning was hampered during this process. We also managed to deploy the bubble shield rather effectively, driving into an enemy base and setting up a defensive perimeter that we could snipe soldiers from. The two weapon additions were also nicely integrated into the gameplay, with the wrench and the bio-field replacing the knife and land mines respectively when collected. To switch back to those items, you simply needed to double tap the D-pad in the direction of the item you wanted. The wrench comes with 400 points of "ammo," and can be applied to heal any vehicle by striking the side of a machine you're standing next to. Conversely, you can use the wrench to slowly break enemy vehicles apart by hitting them with the tool, and its surprisingly effective as a stealth attack against damaged gear. The bio-field can be used as a weapon, but its attack is a bit more insidious. Instead of aiming at an enemy, it's deployed in a general area of effect for what appears to be thirty seconds or so. Any ally walking into the field is slowly healed, while enemies start taking damage and die. What we found was a particularly nasty technique was capturing all of the checkpoints on a map before placing the bio-field emitters inside the enemy base near their spawn points. Immediately when an enemy would spawn in, they were in danger of taking damage. Plus, if carefully mined around the perimeter of the field, the explosions would continually whittle the other team down. We'll have more on Warhawk, its version 1.3 update and the Operation: Broken Mirror booster pack as soon as possible.
