capr
Hi, so let me start with I am a complete linux noob.... I heard ubuntu is a good place to start for new converters, so i tried installing it... my 8800 video card wont get along with ubuntu so after days of reading and trying things, i gave up and asked a friend for a suggestion. He told me about debian. I read up on Debian and it seems to have a steep learning curve but once you get it down, it's easy from there. so, i am going on a trip and won't be around my computer, but I would like to read something about linux and working with things. So any linux for dummies books? other than the obvious linux for dummies book that comes up when i search for it. lol thanks, Rashid KAviani

markwolfe Veteran Posted February 19, 2008 Veteran Share Posted February 19, 2008 Ubuntu wouldn't work with your nVidia 8800? It pops up a bubble asking if you want to enable restricted drivers for it on first boot after you install. As far as books go, I have always recommended going to a bookstore if at all possible. Look through their unix section and see if you can find a few books that look promising. Read through them a bit to avoid the ones that seem to be way over your head. Also skip the ones that are too simplistic.
soothsayer
Ubuntu is based off of debian. If you are new to linux, I'd recommend sticking with Ubuntu, it's very friendly to n00bs like myself.
