TW.4T
Hi, like the topic askes, what are the "other OS`s" for the PS3 apart from Linux. I am about to install OpenSuse and was wondering what other operating system can be installed. I know Windows is out of the question, but what about OSX? Thanks in advance ..... markwolfe Veteran Posted February 19, 2008 Veteran Share Posted February 19, 2008 OSX is out of the question. EULA. Warez. That sort of thing.
CelticWhisper
I'd think that EULA fascism aside, OS X would be out of the question as the PS3 is running a custom architecture for which OS X has never been built.
TW.4T
yea, i never thought of the EULA for OSX. So are there any others or do they have to be linux based?
markwolfe Veteran Posted February 19, 2008 Veteran Share Posted February 19, 2008 EULA fascism? :ermm: They just tie it to their hardware. They don't make you type in an alphanumeric key. They don't authorize you through Apple Genuine Advantage. They just want it on their hardware. They even offer family packs for up to 5 PCs. In comparison, Microsoft's XP EULA even forbids "displaying" the OS on another computer - technically forbidding things like VNC. They are considerate enough to specifically allow their own Remote Desktop to do so, just not third party. (I don't know of anyone who obeys this - but most people don't even read the EULA). markwolfe Veteran Posted February 19, 2008 Veteran Share Posted February 19, 2008 :p I am of the opinion that a Mac is a PC. Even as a G3/4/5, they were Personal Computers. Just not IBM(compatible) PCs. As for the Original Poster, I would think that one of the many BSDs have been ported. However, gamer sites are blocked here at work, so I cannot view many of the results, as they tend to show up in gamer forums and sites.

Hey, don't get me wrong, I love my Macs and I love OS X, but I've always been of the mindset that once I buy something it is mine, mine, mine and I'll use it how I see fit. They got their money for it, and if I can adapt it to other hardware, I'll do so. I agree that it's a far sight better than the Windows one, though. I hadn't heard the "no display" bit, but oh well, I'm not in any hurry to rush home and uninstall VNC. I dunno. Call me a GPL (or BSD?) junkie I suppose, but I know I'd tell GM to get stuffed if they said I could only drive my Saturn on GM roads. Cash now theirs, car now mine, thanks come again buh-bye now. Likewise with Apple. Cash now theirs, OS and box now mine, door's to your left and don't let the cat out. know, I know, car analogies are the new Godwin, I just don't agree with (and thus don't abide by) the mentality that the OS is still "theirs" after I've paid for it. Copyright law in my country is ass-backwards and needs to address things like this. Right on, by the way, about "Macs=PCs." I used to be right anal about using "Mac" and "x86 box" to differentiate, but I've been lax as of late and let the geek vernacular get the best of me. Hell, if there's one lesson people can take from the Linux crowd it's to be specific about the hardware. i386, amd64, x86_64, SPARC, ppc64... As for BSD on PS3 (heh...rhyming++), I've heard nothing about it but I can't see there being any major barriers to porting. All they'd really have to do is port the kernel and most of the rest would follow. I suppose there are some multimedia drivers, extensions, modules, etc. that could do with a custom recode, but since Sony have been jacktards about allowing other OSes access to the video hardware, I'm not sure exactly how much good that would do. PL_ Veteran Posted February 19, 2008 Veteran Share Posted February 19, 2008 I would recommend Ubuntu if you've never used Linux before /overused recommendation :p Does anyone know why Canonical ditched PPC support for Ubuntu? That didn't seem like a very smart move with the PS3 and all :/
markwolfe Veteran Posted February 20, 2008 Veteran Share Posted February 20, 2008 PPC is still there for download. It just is community supported, not Canonical. http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/gutsy/release/
