Blu-ray Player Sales Well Over 10 Million Thanks To Sony PS3

Recommended Posts

Boston (dbTechno) - The installed user base of the high-def Blu-ray format is well over 10 million players in the homes of consumers thanks to the popularity of the Sony PS3. The PS3 was a huge factor in the format war as it has a built-in Blu-ray player, compared to the Xbox 360 which required you to purchase the HD DVD player add-on drive.

The momentum of Blu-ray is apparent as it is now the clear choice for high-def movies and entertainment. Toshiba announced the end of the HD DVD format as they will no longer be making any players or anything related to HD DVD as of the end of March.

Much of the success of Blu-ray has to be attributed to the PS3 though as it has a built-in Blu-ray player.

The Sony PS3 makes up for over 10 million of the worldwide Blu-ray players in the homes of consumers. Comparing this to the fact that Toshiba only managed to sell 1 million HD DVD players, including the Xbox 360 external HD DVD add-on drives which were sold, and it is clear why Blu-ray won the format war.

This follows the same type of trend consumers saw when the Sony PS2 released, with a built-in DVD player. It helped get many players into homes of consumers without requiring them to buy a separate device outside of their video game console, thus sparking sales and notariety of the DVD format.

It seems Blu-ray is taking the same course.

That's what happens when you integrate!

Now while it's obvious not every PS3 owner may own a HD movie just now, they probably will in the coming future, and it's nice to know you don't need anymore hardware to play your HD movies when you're ready to go from DVD.... and that your player is future proof (profiling).

I don't see how this post is any different than this one: https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=620756

They may look different, but people will be talking about the same things in both anyways (and are already, as BD is a part of said thread).

Yup exact same article, well spotted.

When you post an article stating that the PS3 has sold 10.5 million consoles, nobody here particularly needs you to post an article saying that BD has sold over 10 million players because of the PS3. The latter follows completely from the former.

Since I just bought my 1080p TV I can appreicate Blu Ray even more.. ... I do think its a little stupid that HD and Blu Ray cant just work together though... It doesnt make sense to me how some movies are on HD and some are on Blu Ray... Something has got to change in the future ... There is no way that its going to stay like this forever....

Why waste your time in here then? I thought my posts were a waste of time for you regardless.

One discusses the PS3 sales so far in a raw format vs other console sales trends. This one discusses the impact of having an integrated Blu Ray player vs an addon, and how it related to the HD war.

Some parts of the discussions may intertwine.

With HD DVD dead, you should expect to see some if not all the backlog of HD DVD exclusives released on Blu Ray.

I would say about 70%-75% of that 10 million were thanks to the PS3.

If there has been 10 million PS3's sold, then that's 10 million Blu-Ray players.

I think what he is predicting is 70-75% of PS3 owners have used/do use Blu Rays on their PS3s.

I have one friend who hasn't bought any Blu Ray movies for his PS3 yet, but he's still on an SDTV :pinch:

That makes more sense then  I imagine there are still people out there that don't realise their PS3's can play Blu-Rays.

Yeah when I finally invest in a PS3 I will also need to splash out on a HDTV, can't be playing it on a 17" SDTV, wouldn't be doing it justice!

Also I suppose if I couldn't afford the TV I could hook it up to my 22" SM226BW.

Yeah the route of the monitor as long as it will work with the PS3 is a popular choice for those not ready to splash out on a TV
