PS3: Status Update?

Recommended Posts

I've been out of the gaming loop since 94'. I was thinking of buying a PS3, but i was wondering if theres going to be a new model coming out soon (I'd hate to buy one only to find that a new one comes out a month later). When I go on ebgames.com, the 30gb model is only available. I thought there was a 60gb+ model?

Can some of you PS3 pros tell me what the deal is here? Is there a new model coming out soon? When should I buy the system? I want the best and newest model, and am willing to wait for a couple of months. Thanks.

It just depends. I assume since you haven't been into gaming for a while, you won't have any PS2 games, so backward compatibility (which has been removed from current PS3s) won't be a factor.

I thought I heard talk of a new SKU with backward compatibility back in and a bigger harddrive. Can anybody else confirm?

To be honest, my kids had a PS2 (which broke) they have all PS2 games. I'm mostly getting the system for myself, but I have a handful of PS2 games i may want to play. PS2 support is going to be important. I thought that PS3 had backwards compatibility.

I'll give it a stab, the deal is (it does various a little bit though from country to country) the 60Gb/20Gb Models are discontinued, you can still get them if you know where to look though, the 60Gb has been the most desirable as it has full backwards compatibilty with PS2 software as well as PS1 software. the 40Gb system is the current and only system*, no backwards compatibilty with PS2 software. There is rumor of a 160Gb model in the pipeline but I'm unsure if it is true or what new specs it might bring, but apparently it's based off the 40Gb model. One thing to remember though is the PS3 HDD is user upgradable (just takes 2.5" Laptop SATA drive) so unless the new model offers new features you want/need you could simply buy a 40Gb and put a bigger HDD in it and you got virtually the same thing anyway. That was sortas the quick version, I hope that helps?

* = I'm not sure about the 80Gb model though, it's release was quite limited.

I thought there was software emulation. Is this still true? Cant you download a software emulator for the PS3 that runs PS2 games?

That maybe true for the 80Gb model, but the 40Gb model (and possibly the rumored 160Gb model) have no backwards compatibilty at all with PS2 software but they can run PS1 software. However, there is yet another rumor going around that backwards compatibilty via software emulation might be included in a future update but it is only a rumor.

There was hardware emulation on one SKU of the PS3, and the other SKU's that had backwards compatibility had software emulation, which isn't downloaded onto the PS3, it just operates differently then hardware emulation.

I would definetly go for a used 80gig model, sounds like just what you need.

Check out the chart a little down the page, it will really help you find what you what!

Well what I meant is what is out in the market that is sold by Sony right now that has BC is only the 80GB.

The 80GB SKU disappeared from Sony online shop website yesterday. So it's on the market but not for a long time.

I'd wait if I were you. If more rumors crop up about another model and/or BC being added into the 40GB you can hold on and grab a newer one.

Though, to be fair, I can't imagine there being much advantage to this way of doing things, so if you get a 60GB now off eBay I doubt you'll regret it.
