markwolfe Veteran Posted February 24, 2008 Veteran Share Posted February 24, 2008 In short, yes. Linux can network wirelessly. The longer answer is that it varies based on chipset of your wireless device. Some are supported natively. Some are supported through a 'wrapper' that allows you to use a Windows driver in Linux. A few, from my understanding, just really won't work. I'm not a wireless user - desktop plugged into router here. But that seems to be the current state of wifi in Linux. Foub
Well, yes, it is wireless compatible. I have a wireless router (D-Link WBR 1310) with my cable modem plugged into it and my system plugged into the router while my mother has one of those ASUS Eee PC 4G Surf laptops that is running Linux and it connected right away though its wireless adapter with no trouble at all. All I did was plug everything in without installing any other drivers. I used the web browser to configure it as well. P.S. You may not realize this but most major servers are run though Linux. Many of the online games like WoW (I think) use Linux as the OS for their servers.

markwolfe Veteran Posted March 14, 2008 Veteran Share Posted March 14, 2008 Yeah, if you just bought the hardware and it isn't compatible, I would see if I could exchange it (even for an in-store credit for another purchase) with one that is listed by the manufacturer as being supported.
