Universal Buy Ludlum Estate Paving Way for Many Bournes!

Universal Pictures has made an overall deal with the estate of "The Bourne Identity" author Robert Ludlum that gives the studio exclusive rights to the Jason Bourne character and first look at other Ludlum novels.

The deal with Ludlum Entertainment paves the way for more installments in the Bourne saga, which was originally envisioned as a three-picture series but has become Universal's answer to James Bond.

After the first three films grossed a total of more than $1 billion worldwide, U signed Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass for a fourth film that George Nolfi is penning. Produced by Frank Marshall and Ludlum Entertainment chairman-CEO Jeffrey Weiner, the film will be readied for a summer 2010 release.

Weiner will take offices on the Universal lot as part of the deal and hire development executives as the company takes an active hand in developing projects, including some not based on books by Ludlum. Weiner was the author's accountant for 16 years before being tapped by Ludlum to be estate executor and to run the holding company that produces his movies and publishes his books and videogames.

"Universal has done such an excellent job with the first three films that they deserve the opportunity to keep Jason Bourne at the studio forever," Weiner told Daily Variety.

The deal was put together by U co-presidents of production Jimmy Horowitz and Donna Langley, who said that the gritty action style has rubbed off on other action fare.

The deal also gives Universal an inside track on other Ludlum books that would be developed with Ludlum Entertainment. That is especially valuable for U, whose chairman Marc Shmuger and co-chairman David Linde have made franchises a priority.

Universal tried but didn't win "The Matarese Circle" when that Ludlum Cold War thriller was shopped last April, with Denzel Washington attached along with "Wanted" scribes Michael Brandt and Derek Haas. MGM and Relativity won the auction; they've set David Cronenberg to direct a film expected to begin production next year. Ludlum titles routinely turn into seven-figure packages, including the $4 million Paramount paid for "The Chancellor Manuscript" in 2005, with Leonardo DiCaprio attached to star and produce with Red Wagon.

Universal is developing another Ludlum book, "The Sigma Protocol," with Strike Entertainment partners Marc Abraham and Eric Newman. Summit Entertainment has "The Osterman Weekend," with Simon Kinberg set to write and direct.

There are plenty more where those came from.

"There is a deep Ludlum library. Over 25 of his novels have never been exploited in movies," Weiner said. He recalled that Ludlum watched a couple of his titles get turned into movies during the early 1980s, and he was underwhelmed by the result. The author died while "The Bourne Identity" was in production. Now, the estate has contractual approval not only on screenplays but also on characters and even actors, Weiner said.

"The goal is to pick the right people to be in business with, so you don't have to wield these things like a club," Weiner said. "If you get to that point, you're in business with the wrong people."

ICM and Henry Morrison rep Ludlum Entertainment.

Hollywood actor Matt Damon is working on a fourth installment of the successful Bourne movie franchise.

Damon and director Paul Greengrass will be developing an original script for the popular series' fourth outing - as the films have dramatised all of Robert Ludlum's best-selling novels.

Yet both are currently held up on other projects - and Damon remains cautious about reprising his physically intense role as superspy Jason Bourne.

He tells Parade magazine, "We're working on it. This time it would be from an original script rather than a book by Robert Ludlum, but the director Paul Greengrass is busy and I am too, so we'll see what happens.

"When I did the first movie I was 29 years old. I am 37 now. After a tough fighting scene, the next day you wake up and feel your body more. That's just the way it is."

Bourne isn't remotely close to Bauer. Damon bitching about his age, don't hear Liam talking smack. I wouldn't mind another one, I liked them, but I'd be equally happy without a fourth.

Yeah there's no book to base the 4th on so a complete new story will be the deal breaker...this has to be the last tho.

Yanno, when I heard about Die Hard 4: Live Free or Die Hard I had my opinions about it. I know Bruce Willis is getting up there in age, can't quite do the same stuff the same way, and you just know doing such a flick totally wears him out.

But then it came out and I saw it, and it's right up there with the rest of the Die Hard movies. I don't look at any of them as particularly better or worse than the others in the series, because I tend to look at the whole thing as a package deal.

Suffice to say, Die Hard 4 kicked some serious ass, and it's an awesome flick.

So far, with 3 Bourne flicks in the can, I say the same thing: they all kick ass. If they, meaning Damon and the rest of the people involved, can pull off another one with the same level of quality, action, suspense, and drama... more power to 'em.

Go Jason go!!! :D

Hmm this will definitely be interesting. I loved the trilogy but I hope by creating this one, they don't ruin the whole trilogy.

I am a Bourne fanatic just like anybody else but jeez, is three not enough? They're going to kill this franchise. Also am I the only one who would love to see a Christian Bale (bad guy) vs. Mat Damon (Bourne) fight? Seriously?

Jason Bourne 4 Now Aiming for Summer 2011

Last we heard, Universal was trying to get a fourth film in the Jason Bourne series on track for a Summer 2010 release. Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass were signed on to return, all they needed was a screenplay and a shooting schedule that fit. But the tentatively discussed Summer 2009 shoot doesn?t seem to be on the horizon.Producer Frank Marshall updates us on the status via Twitter saying that Bourne Ultimatum/Ocean?s Twelve scribe George Nolfi ?should have a draft by June? 2009 and that the film ?is in the works for Summer 2011.? This of course would mean that the film would need to go into production by Summer 2010, October at very latesty latest. ?It really take long to get these scrip:) right! :),? admits Marshall. Marshall has previously stated that he would like to see Bourne go to South America in his next adventure, which will be the first movie not based on a Robert Ludlum novel.
