Rappy Veteran Posted December 2, 2009 Author Veteran Share Posted December 2, 2009 UPDATE: Paul Greengrass has issued a statement, reprinted in Variety. He's as diplomatic as you'd expect: "My decision to not return a third time as director is simply about feeling the call for a different challenge. There's been no disagreement with Universal Pictures. The opportunity to work with the Bourne family again is a difficult thing to pass up, but we have discussed this together and they have been incredibly understanding and supportive." Read the whole statement there, and note that Mike Fleming floats George Nolfi and Tony Gilroy as possible replacement directors. Nolfi is plausible, as he's already directing Damon in The Adjustment Bureau, and good notes there might offset any lack of support for his Bourne 4 script. Gilroy would be a surprise, as he wasn't at all happy with the way Bourne 2 and 3 went down. If he came back to the series, the underperformance of Duplicity notwithstanding, I'd be very surprised. Rappy Veteran Posted December 7, 2009 Author Veteran Share Posted December 7, 2009 Could Greengrass' Departure Mean the End of Bourne? At the tail end of this morning's Invictus press conference, Matt Damon was cornered by a number of reporters asking for an update on the next Jason Bourne film in wake of the recent news that The Bourne Supremacy and Bourne Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass would not be returning. Damon stunned everyone by responding that he was not interested in the part without Greengrass helming. "When [Greengrass] wants to do one, we'll do it," said Damon. "Are you saying that it's Greengrass or no 'Bourne'?" one reporter asked. "Yeah, I've always said that," replied the actor, adding, "But I think it'll happen down the road. We just don't have a script yet." It should be noted that it was not entirely clear as to whether or not Damon was fully aware of Greengrass' announcement at the beginning of the week about his intentions to not return to the franchise, a series originally launched without Greengrass' involvement. Matt Damon is set to star under in Paul Greengrass's war drama, Green Zone early next year. Next week he can be seen opposite Morgan Freeman in Clint Eastwood's Invictus. Rappy Veteran Posted February 1, 2010 Author Veteran Share Posted February 1, 2010 Speaking at the UK premiere for Invictus, Damon gave the following update on the status of the Bourne franchise: There?ll probably be a prequel of some kind with another actor and another director before we do another one, just because I think we?re probably another five years away from doing it - we?ve got to get a script. :pinch:

Scorbing
Greengrass is a horrible horrible director. +1 They should get a director such as Dominic Sena or Antoine Fuqua to direct the next Bourne film.

Ayepecks
I think if they did a prequel it wouldn't involve Bourne, personally. I think it'd be more of a history of the program with a different lead character, kind of like the Scorpion King. I'm REALLY looking forward to "The Green Zone", the Greengrass and Damon film coming out in March. It looks amazing.

mattmatik
Matt Damon is such a great actor, I really wouldn't want to see a 'Bourne' movie with anyone else in the role (prequel or not). The way the 3rd ended, it can either be followed up with a 4th movie with Damon or just left alone.
Crazysah
I wouldn't mind a prequel if its done right Yeah that is a big 'if' though. What would they make it on? A whole new cast and director and just about the program?

amr_01
IT'S OFFICIAL: PAUL GREENGRASS IS DONE WITH JASON BOURNE I just got off the phone with Paul Greengrass, who is promoting his excellent new film Green Zone, which more or less takes the feel and action of a Bourne movie and places it into the real world and deals with real, current political issues. Paul and I talked (or rather Paul talked - you ask a question and twenty minutes later your interview is over and you have a massive, smart and awesome essay delivered to you by the world's smartest action movie director) about the film at hand, but at the end of the conversation I had to ask whether he was officially done with the Bourne franchise. He had said that he was finished, but recent quotes from Green Zone and Bourne star Matt Damon made it seem possible that a third film from Greengrass could be in the offing. 'I have moved on,' he told me. 'I finished [Green Zone] in July, had the summer off, and I came back and thought I could find a way to get engaged and make [a fourth Bourne film], [but] I thought in my head there were so many other things and films I wanted to make. I didn't have the fire in my belly. Not that I don't like Jason Bourne, not that I'm not extremely grateful to the franchise, not that I'm extremely close to the studio - there were no arguments. I didn't feel like I had anything else to contribute. It just happens with franchises; you get to a point where you feel like you've done it.' That said, Greengrass sees the franchise going on, and his association with Universal (who are distributing Green Zone as well as the next Bourne movie), continuing. 'They need to find someone else to come in to take it in a new direction I wouldn't have thought of and it will be better. I'll continue to make movies with the studio, and I'll continue to make movies with Matt, because there are a lot of movies I'd like to make with him. In the end in your creative journey through life you need new challenges, and I've come to that place.' So what's that next challenge? 'Could it be a romantic comedy?' he joked. 'Probably not. It'll probably be some gigantic action movie, but it'll be fun and new. Watch this space.' Source

Rappy Veteran Posted June 9, 2010 Author Veteran Share Posted June 9, 2010 Universal Pictures announced today that Tony Gilroy is returning to write the script for The Bourne Legacy, the fourth installment in the Jason Bourne franchise. Gilroy is also writing a "franchise bible." He penned The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum. Frank Marshall and Pat Crowley are also back to produce alongside Captivate Entertainment's Jeffrey Weiner and Ben Smith. While "The Bourne Legacy" is a book written by Eric Lustabader in Robert Ludlum's "Bourne" series, the film will not be based on it. Matt Damon has gone on record that he wouldn't reprise the role if director Paul Greengrass is not returning. We'll have to wait and see if this announcement changes Damon's mind.
