The Bourne Legacy (2012)

Universal Pictures announced today that Tony Gilroy is returning to write the script for The Bourne Legacy, the fourth installment in the Jason Bourne franchise. Gilroy is also writing a "franchise bible." He penned The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum.

Frank Marshall and Pat Crowley are also back to produce alongside Captivate Entertainment's Jeffrey Weiner and Ben Smith.

While "The Bourne Legacy" is a book written by Eric Lustabader in Robert Ludlum's "Bourne" series, the film will not be based on it.

Matt Damon has gone on record that he wouldn't reprise the role if director Paul Greengrass is not returning. We'll have to wait and see if this announcement changes Damon's mind.

If anyone has read "The Bourne Legacy", you'll know it doesn't even seem to take place in the same universe the 3 books from Ludlum do, why, because by the third and final book in the series by Ludlum David Webb is old but Lustabader has him fighting, running & jumping in the fourth book like he did in the first book.

Tony Gilroy, the director of Michael Clayton and Duplicity, has signed on to direct the fourth film in the Jason Bourne franchise, reports Deadline.

The film, currently titled The Bourne Legacy, comes from a script by Gilroy, who also wrote The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, both of which were directed by Paul Greengrass.

Although leading man Matt Damon had previously stated that he had no desire to return without Greengrass at the helm, he has also admitted to being excited for a fourth Bourne outing. Even with the shift in franchise directors, attempts are certainly underway to negotiate Damon's return.

The filmic Bourne series has been loosely adapted from the novels by Robert Ludlum. The original film, The Bourne Identity, was directed by Doug Liman.

Thankfully Tony Gilroy as responded to the confusion by revealing what the real plans are and they don?t involve Matt Damon, or even Jason Bourne for that matter.

From Hollywood Elsewhere:

?It?s a completely original screenplay.? Secondly, ?This is not a reboot or a recast or a prequel. No one?s replacing Matt Damon. There will be a whole new hero, a whole new chapter?this is a stand-alone project.

?The easiest way to think of it is an expansion or a reveal,? Gilroy says. ?Jason Bourne will not be in this film, but he?s very much alive. What happened in the first three films is the trigger for what happens. I?m building a legend and an environment and a wider conspiracy?the world we?re making enhances and advances and invites Jason Bourne?s return [down the road].

?Everything you saw in the first three films actually happened, and everyone who got into will be rewarded for paying attention. We?re going to show you the bigger picture, the bigger canvas. When you see what we?re going and see what we?re doing it?ll be pretty obvious?.but Jason Bourne?s actvities in the first three films is the immediate trigger.?

We learned earlier this month that Matt Damon will not play Jason Bourne in writer/director Tony Gilroy?s upcoming The Bourne Legacy, the fourth entry in the gritty action series.

Gilroy spoke with Deadline this week and offered a little more insight into his plans for Bourne 4, which will apparently set the stage for Damon to reprise his role as the (now formerly) amnesiac killer ? if the actor so chooses.

Legacy will feature a new protagonist that, like Bourne, is a covert government agent that was trained (or rather, brainwashed) to become an assassin by the government and likely played a role in either Operation Treadstone (from The Bourne Identity) or Blackbriar (from The Bourne Ultimatum). The fourth Bourne film ? which will not contain any plot elements from Eric Lustbader?s novel of the same name ? is not a reboot, as it both continues the storyline developed in the first three movies and acts to ?expand the franchise mythology? by shifting its focus away from Jason Bourne himself.

Gilroy told Deadline that he ?couldn?t imagine trying to replace [Damon as Bourne]? and that the Jason Bourne character himself is still very much alive in Legacy. While Damon essentially closed the door on his involvement with Bourne 4 earlier this year, he could easily return for a later film ? assuming that Bourne Legacy does well enough, financially speaking, to justify a fifth movie.

A Bourne movie without Bourne just sounds stupid.... I hope it doesn't turn out they just re-assigned the Jason Bourne identity to another assassin, only to forget who he is and go awol. Although, they could add a twist, make the assassin go berserk, start knocking off his handlers, and anyone else that gets in his way. Then in the fifth movie, have the CIA forcibly bring David Webb (original Bourne) out of retirement to take down his replacement.

James Franco has sparked rumours he is in line to take over from Matt Damon as the lead actor in the Bourne franchise after he was spotted with director Tony Gilroy.

Damon, who has played the titled role in three Bourne films, will not appear in the upcoming fourth installment of the popular secret agent movie series, The Bourne Legacy.

Gilroy recently revealed he plans to unveil "a whole new hero" in the blockbuster, but will leave the door open for Damon to return in the future.

He has now fuelled speculation his "new hero" will be Franco after they were seen in talks at a screening of the actor's new movie 127 Hours in New York on Tuesday night.

A source tells the New York Post that Gilroy "made a beeline for Franco, asking to be introduced to him".

The Bourne Legacy is due for release in 2012.

The Bourne movies are some of my favorite movies of all time. Matt Damon will always be Jason Bourne to me. James Franco is a great actor, and I think he could do a good job in the main character role of a Bourne movie. I just hope they use him as a new main character and not an actor-replaced version of Jason Bourne. Because that would ruin the movie for me.

This is one series of films that I have enjoyed through and through. I liked all of the movies. I just hope they do the franchise justice and don't ruin it.
