My PS3 experience!

Recommended Posts

OK, so my job puts me in the position, daily, where I need to offer advice to the general public over which games console to buy. It is something i am asked about on a daily basis at my place of work.

Now, if they are looking for a games console for their kids, say, 15yrs and under as a family machine I tell them to get the Wii. Hands down the perfect choice.

When they ask me to recommend either the 360 or the PS3 I always say the 360, for all th reasons you all know already, you will have heard them all before. Until recently I was doing this based purley on my hatred for Sony consoles, I detested the PS1 and even more so the PS2. I basically thought consoles were a good idea that didnt work until the Gamecube nd the XBOX came on the scene.

So anyway, I am able to borrow hardware from work for a week at a time so when Uncharted came out I really thought it looked great and thought that I could borrow a PS3 and give it a whirl, and then at least I would know what I was talking about. I was hoping to be proven wrong about the console.....I wasnt. So here is a walkthrough of the reasons will never own a PS3.

- Came home with a copy of Uncharted and Spidey 3 blu-ray.

- Hooked it all up to me 32" Samsung, and booted up.

- So far so good, picked up my wireless broadband and the machine wanted to update. No problem I thought, does this on the 360 often enough so I started the update.

- 10 mins later its downloaded and installing...........20mins later its at 10%........10 more mins pass and I give up, I dont need to be online to play uncharted. I dont understand why the updates take so long to install, but I wasnt going to hang arond any longer.

- So, I stick in Spidey to have a look at a blu-ray on my HDTV. All is well, looks stunning amazing picture quality.

- OK, enough of that I think, time for some Uncharted, so I hit eject...........the disc pops out and the console hangs.....just sits there freeze framed asking for the spidey disc. I am thinking WTF, on the 360 you hit eject and your disc pops out and you return to the dashboard. So thats annoying.

- So I hit the PS button on the remote.....nothing happens......so I tap the reset button on the console....nothing happens. I actually had to flip the switch on the back of the machine to change discs. Not a good feature.

- OK, so back on the interface, which is nice looking but way overcomplicated to navigate, another feature which is better on the 360 and I stick in Uncharted.

- It comes up asking me to update again.....so I try again and I sh*t you not, it took 45mins to update the console and let me play. So I played some Halo 3 in the meantime.

- Once I was in I played Uncharted for 2hrs or so and loved it, a great game and visually stunning, very, very enoyable. All I will say is that I hate the pad, its so light i feels terrible, now this is not really a downside to the PS3 as I am sure Sony peeps would say the same about the 360 one, just not used to that light a controller.

- OK, game played and enjoyed it only took me about 1hr 30mins or so to be able to play.....so far not impressed, good game wrong console.

Now I understand that slow updates are not a fault with the machine or anything but these are things that stand out to me as better on the 360. And, the reset button that doesnt seem to work baffles me somewhat, I am not sure what that is about. I did think after a while that you had to hold down the button for a while to get it to work but I have since learned that, that resets the console to factory settings......nice one.

So, I stuck in Devil May Cry 4 to check the 'improved load times' after the '25 min' install. Mine took just over 30mins to install, I played it alongside the 360 version to see the difference and the load times on the PS3 are marginally faster, around 1-2 secs. Not impressed, I would rather just bang in the disc and play with the slightly longer times than wait an eternity for an install. This is supposed to be a console after all not a PC.

Anyway, this alongside the fact that the PS3 has no decent games that I cant get on my 360 (Uncharted aside) coupled with the fact that it is a badly designed machine, ugly and huge. As well as the fact that games keep getting delayed on it and come out on the 360 first not to mention that it has some of the greatest games of all time as exclusives (Halo3, Gears) as well as a vastly improved online service, friends system, media handling and its way cheaper. I almost forgot about the episodic content for GTA IV exclusive to the 360 andlack of install times.

I am very glad to be a 360 owner and I continue to steer people away from the PS3.

Pity the 360's explode so often.

Rant ends.

Flame on people!

Seriously? I love the XMB. It's one of the great things about the PS3. It's so simple, easy to use, straightforward, clean, and looks great in HD. The Dashboard looks pretty ugly in comparison, but I'm one of the freaks that thought the original Dashboard looked nice

It does look gorgeous, no doubt about it, but getting to where I want to be in the 360 dashboard seems much more simple and faster than in the PS3.

Wow, interesting - in my opinion you spent way to little time with it :/

Anyways, what firmware was your PS3 when you first turned it on?

It wont reset to factory settings if you hold it down till it says ONE beep.. - after that one beep, dont push anything..

So your saying you dont really care about your job basically saying the wii is for 15 year olds and hated sony ps3? Wow I guess all the cursing in No more Heroes is for kids also right? I have both a wii and a ps3 and they complement each other nicely and the ps3 rocks as a media player.

I kinda disagree - the blades take ages for me to load and the interface is just confusing to me :/ on xbox you have several buttons linking to one thing :/

Not to mention the blades themselves take up 1/3 of the screen which leaves not much room for text but yet they decide to stick that "play game in tray" button on all pages?

I love PS3 XMB, as pure legend said it's nice and clean. While 360 also has good one but due to the massive amount of contends its way too hard to navigate thru the blades and sub-menus to reach the stuff you want.

While 360 takes lot of space for the blades on PS3 once you select what you want the previous screen disappears so it?s much easier of the eye to focus on the thing s you want.

blades load instantly for me in my experience. also i like the fact that the play game button is on every blade. Imagine constantly going back to one blade just to play, it'd get annoying after a while

Not picking holes in your statement, everybody has their own opinion,

But i find the xmb is so simple to navigate, left right, up down. All the settings are in the settings tab, rathar than some in the settings tab, some on the gamertag blade ect. I find the xbox oporating system horrible. Verry juvinile looking, and filled with ads. nah. dont like xbox oporating system.

Also, ps3 is an open system, allowing customising games, true, only ureal is the onlygame at the moment that can be done with atm, but still, more than the 360 can.

Also, dont know why it took too long to download updates, takes 5mins for me.

The install feature is there due to the bluray having a 2x read speed, due to the 48x of the 360 dvd drive.

Also, the PS3 is the same price as an Elite now too.

ANy way, nuff said lol.

Well it wouldnt be annoying if the pages didnt take that long to load :p

There are no buttons on every page to start your favorite arcade game - you have to go the games tab.. which is better I think

Wow, sorry man, but you never gave it a chance. I don't understand what problem you had with the eject button. Works fine here. I can't believe you hated the ps1/ps2, for what it appears, for no apparent reason. They were huge consoles and competition was simply pathetic. Maybe you were rooting for the underdog. Sony IMO, is currently this gen's underdog.

The PS3's GUI IMO looks better. But that's my taste, sleeker, more minimal. While the 360's is so bulky and the color choice is kinda ugly. Also, the PS3 has some sweet looking themes, so there is some customizability, which you simply do not see in the 360.

In terms of media, the ps3 servers as a far better media center. It has the same support as the 360, but you can actually copy files onto the hdd, and its a much quieter machine.

On the other side of the gaming spectrum, I can say that the 360 is a very unreliable machine. It feels pretty cheap, build/quality wise. The ps3's controller is it's weakest point, but most people are use to it.

Lastly, I give both consoles a good chance, I love what both have to offer, and I recommend them depending on what people are looking for. I don't simply steer people towards what I prefer. Let people try them out and make up their minds. Especially if you haven't given the PS3 a proper try. There's a lot more that can be elaborated on, and some people will.

There's been several threads like this, but it seems to me that yours clearly lies in the side of, being discriminatory towards sony, and not being fair. (trying not to use the word fanboy/flame, etc.)

NO, you misunderstand me. Maybe I was not clear enough. If asked for a machine to recommend as a family machine for all ages I would always go for the Wii, obviously its up to the parents to screen their kids from any content on the machine that is unsuitable.

I have a Wii myself an I love it. but the PS3 and the 360 are not as suited to all ages and family play like the Wii is.

Clearer?

I love my PS3, and love the OS as well. Just looks so much better in HD. I also love my xbox but the PS3 is just so much sleeker looking IMO and also for me the most important thing quieter!!!!!

It's all opinion, and although I disagree, I respect his opinion.

However, in contrast, here's my quick opinion on the 360 from the short time that I owned one:

Blades were laggy. Why does a built in menu lag when transitioning onto the screen? The whole console feels and looks cheap to me, which isn't encouraging. Batteries in the controllers weigh it down, and I didn't like that. The alternative to that is the play and charge pack, which is an added cost. Which brings me to the wireless adapter, which would be essential for me to play online. Online...Yet another cost for me. The opinion about the XMB is just that, an opinion. I much prefer it to the blades system. Looks cleaner and neater to me.

The PS3 may lack in certain areas, but there are firmware updates that help/cure the problems. It's been out for ~1 year less than the 360, it needs time to catch up.

I have no idea how anyone can hate any of the consoles this generation.

They all make me love being a gamer.

Right now my PS3 is mostly being used as a media server, and I don't mind that. It hands down thrashes the 360 at being a media server, the biggest reason being MKV2VOB for the PS3 - Playback of HD content in 5.1 sound, and no transcoding.

AVI/Xvid has been indentical for me on both consoles, each play everything I've tried. However I use the PS3 regardless, I prefer the interface of the PS3 for media playback - The movie previews get me excited :woot: (15 sec clips on XMB lol).

I do gaming more often on my 360 just now, but im sitting waiting on the PS3 exclusives which will help steal some of the thunder from me playing the 360.

As for looks/XMB/ect, all of that is subjective to taste, but I struggle to believe anyone can bash the simplicity of the XMB.

The Dashboard integrates everything well, but it doesn't look as stylish/sleek in HD as the XMB I think.

However as I said, until Sony get in-game XMB, the Dashboard for gaming pips the XMB easily.

Sad to hear you despise Sony consoles, I have no guilt in admitting I've liked all 3, or 4 if you want to include the PSP.

The PS3 physically to me, also looks the most expensive. I know you cant really base that on PS1 vs PS2 vs PS3 by todays standards, but even when the PS2 came out, it was never a looker at all, and looked cheap under a TV. The PS3 as I've said, at least looks a little more expensive due to the finish it has.

have all 3 consoles, i dont hate any of them, each good in its own way and i actively use 2 out of the 3 a lot. The wii generally does not get used, it does not have my type of games and the age group is for kids mostly, when the lads are around tend to have a game of boxing n tennis but thats about it.

360 is great, it is the console i prefer over the wii and ps3, reason being, the games that are out at the moment for that are great, some of the games i have for the 360 (multiplatform ones) actually play and sometimes look visually better than the ones on PS3, so yeah it does have an advantage there.

However ... the 360 has been around for longer and deveopers are still getting grips with it, few months down the line with MGS and FFXIII and other great games due out you can expect my intrest in the PS3 to be renewed, at the moment im happy with warhawk (good game not great), motor storm and heavenly sword.

Another reason why i do not have many PS3 games is that they are much more expensive than the 360 ones. You will not find many that are under ?15-20. Whereas the xbox360 library has tonnes and tonnes of games in that price range, (preowned and new).

With Home on the horizon on the PS3 that will spice things up a bit i say so theres no need to knock any console yet. The best is yet to come

own ps3 and xbox360, like them both the same, just each console has it's "games" and "purposes". Halo 3 for xbox, GT5 or Heavenly Sword for PS3. Online play for xbox and offline play on ps3 and Blu-Ray :)(IMO).

While every one has their own valid opinion, and I wont say you are wrong because you are entitled to it, but I did read the whole thing.

But you started doff really badly, why should I take what you say seriously if you start by saying you hate Sony and detest the PS1/2, at which point I can see people not bothering to read any more, can you give us a valid reason for it?

Chances are gaming wouldn't be where we are today if Sony never came along and built the PS1/2 and brought such a huge market to gaming.

Starting to update your console and then to stop it, well you are just asking for problems in the future with it if your going to treat it like so.

The updates for me never took long, when I whipped out the Ps3 when I got it I let it update while charging the controller for the first time, so save me time in the long run.

Not every console works the same way, the Ps3 has touch sensitive buttons, for all it knows you could of accidentally ejected the disk, in future I would advise you to press the PS button the on the controller and quit form there, and from the XMB you can eject the disk and then get up and change it.

It was only annoying because you have been doing it one way, everyone else I'm sure is fine, all the consoles aren't going to act the same way, lol.

To turn the Ps3 off, when pressing on the power sensitive button, just hold it down for about 3 seconds, it will shut it self down safely kinda like a PC would, turning it off at the back could damage it.

As to the updates in general being slow, yes, it can be annoying, but at the moment the updates are bigger than they need to be, Sony have said they are trying to sort this out so you don't have to download all the updates in one gone every time you update the console.

So patching instead of fully reinstalling everything from the initial firmware.

The Devil May Cry installing, well, no one likes that, and I doubt few would take installing over just playing the game, not really Sony's fault, more Capcom than anything else, hopefully something can be done about future games.

You don't like the interface, that's fine, some people don't, some people do, very Marmite like, lol.

I don't see why it is a badly designed machine, it has a great failure rate, it works, it is super quiet, while a little big, its not like the thing is going to be literally sitting in front of the telly, your not spending your time looking at the console, put it somewhere you can see it if it bothers you, it reminds me when people disliked the size of the original Xbox, I always found it to be a lame excuse just to moan, no offence. :p

And saying its not as good because it has some of your favourite games, well that's fine too, just preference what games you like, I can say the opposite, I lvoe my Ps3 for the games I have and enjoy everyday and future titles too.

And I understand delayed games are annoying too, but would you rather a rushed games or a game that took that little more time and came out better?

If developers are silly enough to develop on the Xbox360 that is as easy as developing on a PC then tries to move that over to the Ps3 which runs on totally different architecture, well, its their fault for delays.

Anyway, that's my opinion on what you've said.

I apologise if you take it, or see it as me flaming or beind disrespectful to you or the Xbox360, I don't mean it that way.

I stopped reading just there. You do know that the PS1 and PS2 where the best console made? Not counting the fact that the PS2 is the console that sold the most and offer the biggest catalog of games? It's the PS1 that killed the Super Nintendo and the PS2 just killed the N64 and GameCube. It took many years until Nintendo came out with something "interesting" with the Wii.

As for the upgrade of the console, YES, it's a PAIN, it's slow. But you only have to do it once, when a new firmware update is available. As for the X360, their seems to be updates to each games, each time I pop them into the drive.

Anyway, I would "detest" to be served by you. You give VERY bad advice just because of your ignorance.

I have an original UK 60GB PS3 I got on launch day last year. Not once has it crashed or been slow or anything. It's simply perfect. Best money I've spent on electronics...ever.

I would have to agree, ignoring my pc which I didn't buy myself, but I use quite a lot for work/MSN/general internet usage, I don't think I've been happier with an electronics product or used one so much in the time I've had it.
