No multiplayer in GTA IV for PS3

Recommended Posts

So a Xbox 360 rep came into my work today, and I bought up GTA IV, and he said that Microsoft had 'paid a few extra dollars' and bought their spot to get online playability for GTA IV, leaving PS3 out in the cold. Is this true or what?

Doesnt sound like something Microsoft would do to Rockstar... but anything could happen. I hope it's not true, and would hope Microsoft plays fair.

Not that I'm taking sides or anything, but I don't think Sony has always played fair, could be wrong, but a certain rootkit fiasco and format war come to mind.

In any case, if it is true it sucks for the PS3 version owners, but I just doubt that would happen.

no, it's false. this rumor came up a couple of weeks ago, and a rep from rockstar said that both versions will feature online play.

edit: here's an article talking about it...

GTA IV on 360 to have exclusive multiplayer mode? Not so fast

By Andrew Webster | Published: February 13, 2008 - 11:15AM CT

In an interview with Major Nelson, Microsoft's VP of Interactive Entertainment Don Mattrick made some seemingly telling statements. "I'm really excited with its downloadable content and online multiplayer support," he said, speaking of Grand Theft Auto IV, "again, that's something that's unique to 360." While we already knew that the 360 had secured some exclusive downloadable content, this statement makes it appear as if it will have exclusive online multiplayer support as well.

In response to Mattrick's remarks, Rockstar sent a statement to Next Generation in an attempt to clarify things. "As we've said previously, both versions of the game will have an online multiplayer component," the e-mail explained.

So what we have here are two possibilities: either Mattrick slipped up and said something that was completely false, or the 360 will feature some sort of exclusive multiplayer component, be it a unique mode, options, or what have you. With a game this big, any exclusive content is a big weapon; we'll be keeping our eye on the online mode of GTA4.

The rootkit was their only main fiasco. The format war was them doing a better job than Toshiba [be it advertising, discounts, or pay-offs [which both are guilty of]].

Sounds like a load. I don't know what a "XBOX 360 Rep" is exactly, but they wouldn't go out saying things like that, pre-launch even.

Episodic content aside (which is only a timed 360 exclusive), are there any differences between the copies?

don't think so, however one bonus of the ps3 is free multiplayer. IMO the xbox exclusives probably won't be up to much, just a money spinner. I'm gonna get the PS3 version.

I don't think MS would pay R* $50M for a timed exclusive, it's a full exclusive only for the 360 and will never make it to the PS3.

It is not a timed exclusive.

AFAIK the $50 million was for two "episodes", those two will not be on the PS3.

The PS3 probably will get DLC but it won't be the stuff that Microsoft paid $50 million for.
