startx with ubuntu

Recommended Posts

so I finally managed to install ubuntu on my computer with my 8800gts card. used the text based installation and used recovery mode to mod the xconfig file to use the vesa drivers instead of the nv ones. saved the new xconfig and typed in startx to start things up...

the installation won't recognize most of my hardware, network card (have 2), wireless card, webcam... list goes on, I am also unable to access certain things like the network under system.... I assume it's because I am under recovery mode and these things haven't started yet.

so how do I start the thing in regular mode? If I don't do recovery mode, it just gives me a black screen and I have no control over it. it's as if it's still trying to use the nv drivers and is having problems with my 8800...

any help would be good,

Thanks,

RK

Biting off too much at once?

On first boot after installing, (x)ubuntu recognized I had an nVidia card, and popped up a bubble to ask if I wanted to install the 'restricted' proprietary driver. I clicked it and said yes. Then it correctly installed the driver for me. No messing with the xorg.conf file.

First, let's look at getting your computer running a GUI again. I don't care if it is the vesa, nv, or nvidia driver. Let's start with a system with a GUI.

Then we can look at checking things like the webcam (I ran camorama, and was able to get images from my cheap off-brand knock-off of a Logitech Quick Cam).

that doesn't make much sense.... it didn't ask me which drivers i want it just hangs if i don't do a text based install... but that's not the problem. the system works fine if i start it in recovery mode and do startx to start the desktop... fine being a relative term, there is a lot of things it won't let me do and just doesn't recognize standard things that other linux version recognize.

so all i believe i just need to run it in regular mode, which is the problem. the system just hangs when i try that!!! it doesn't go anywhere and the little light on my monitor that's green when there is a signal, dies out and become yellow.

i can't do ctrl alt F1 or execute any other commands.

The monitor going to standby sounds like a resolution mode issue. Your card may be putting out a higher resolution or frequency than your monitor can handle. If so, then when this happens you can use CTRL+ALT+[num pad plus] or [num pad minus] to toggle among listed resolutions.

The second problem you describe sounds much more serious. Not being able to access the TTY terminals on the first several sessions (typically found on CTRL+ALT+F1 through F6) tells me that a basic function of the kernel/OS is not working.
