I'd rather Sony spend time getting PSN up to the level that Live is instead of making Home... I can't see myself ever really using Home other than once to have a look at what the hype is all about.

I doubt MS are too scared about Home really. Its more like a free game than a Live killer. I don't expect they'll remove the XBL pricing, but I can see them trying to come up with more incentives to use XBL...

What exactly is needed?

Global invites?

Well, the 360 dashboard feels like it was built around XBL, but the XMB feels like PSN is almost just an add-on.

I also prefer how XBL uses the dashboard for the marketplace instead of launching a webpage.

In-game is also missing from PSN... it might be coming soon, but its been coming soon for ages now.

I reckon if they introduced in-game messaging and friends lists, it would be on par.

Yeah people say that PSN feels disjointed from the XMB, but it has its pros and cons. And I think Home is a way to bridge that gap anyway, just in a different way to 360. If they did the same as 360, then everyone would moan that they're copying. Now that they're not, everyone is moaning that they're not copying. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Personally, PSN works great for me and does everything I need (I don't care about in-game messaging and friends lists right now), but I do agree that the Store needs a better layout.

I hope Home succeeds in the sense that it will show the industry that a free online service for consoles is a plausible paradigm. I hope it will push demand for free online services on all consoles in the future.

I hope Home does not succeed in the sense that it will not increase demand for a 3D world/avatar type of system for future online services. I think the whole premise to Home is a horrible idea.

Everything you mentioned is part of the silver member which in case you forgot; is free.

And in-game xmb/dashboard has nothing to do with LIVE

My point is, you think youre paying for all that to justify the cost of XBL Gold - but its either free or has nothing do with LIVE! :/

"FREE"

It's quite a big word in this thread isn't it! No monetary cost != FREE!

In Home you can bet there will be adverts. And there will be a HUGE backend database containing your playing habbits, usage stats, interests, friends and so on.

Make this service "free" to the consumer, you get more people using it, a better, larger and richer database - that can be verified often.

This may not cost you anything, but it will allow Sony to better sell advertising - 1 well targetted campaign is far better than 50 loose campaigns.

Just thinking out loud!

Doesn't make a difference to me. Microsoft has been doing a damn good job of improving and innovating Xbox Live all by themselves without any real competition, so I really don't think it'll matter much in the long run if [Home] succeeds. MS is a long-term-investment company - they already know where they're going to take XBL 5 years or more down the road and I doubt the success (or lack-thereof) of Home will have too much of an effect.

By the way, I'd like to point out that your poll asks two questions that aren't entirely dependent on each other. Not so cool...

Do I want Home to be a success? Sure, why not.

Do I want Home to change the future? Not particularly. As I said above, I think MS can do that themselves just fine, as they've already proven in the past. I don't want the future of XBL changed by something I'm not a giant fan of from a different console.

As much as I enjoy Live I dont really understand why they have to charge us? I mean there are no dedicated servers or anything and it has ads and the marketplace to make money with. Its basically a match making service. Match making services existed before Live and they didnt cost anything!

Thats precisely why paying for Xbox Live is ridiculous. I'm more than happy with the PlayStation network, they even have dedicated servers for some games (Warhawk anyone?). Why pay for online, when your already paying your ISP? Matchmaking, private matches etc are already built into the games as well. I don't see any real bonus to paying extra for a service that should be free. Store updates is negligible, PSN is updated every Thursday with demo's, trailers, add-ons etc. It may not be as much as Xbox Live, but it's not really that big a deal to the point I'd be willing to pay for it. Plus you have to remember that Xbox Live has been around since the original Xbox so of course it'll have more content.

Personally, I think Home is a huge waste of time.

It's not a game.

Sony needs to get features that are relevant to games in.

I don't really mind paying if it means I can get basic functionality that the PS3 still doesn't have.

Wrong.

Burnout Paradise has dedicated servers does it not?

If there are, EA hosts them. There are no dedicated game servers hosted by MS. They have dedicated servers for pretty much all other aspects of XBL, though, and when 10 million people are using the service, it's going to cost MS quite a bit of money.

Sure, but if PC and PS3 can do it for free why cant xbox?

The price you pay for the console and the royalties they get for each sold game should be enough - not to mention the advertising in the dashboard..

You do realise with PC gaming that the servers are not free? Someone does pay for them. Only a few PS3 games have dedicated servers, sure it's more then the 360 but it's nothing to bleat about.

You just backed up my statement - someone is paying for them - but its not us

And PC/PS3 gamers have the ability to host their own games without having to pay some middleman creepy guy just be allowed to do it :s

Do you not see how weird it is?

Ummm, you know what I meant ;)

If I started a CS Source clan and we needed a server, chances are I'd pay for it.

Heheh, people on Xbox Live paying $60 just for the privilege of hosting their own games.

Yeah cos that's all we pay for

I hope Home succeeds, I think it's really cool :D

But let me understand - will some items (furniture, clothes) be free?

Yes, (and this is the exciting part for me) developers have the option to add unlockable Home items into their games :D

In terms of LIVE;

I would have to pay MS just to be able to join and play on your CSS server which YOU pay for

Yeah cos that's all we pay for

Yeah, that is pretty much all youre paying for - everything else is either in silver or has nothing to do with LIVE itself

I just jump in play then go off again i've grown out of the old skool days of clans etc...which home would of been great for lol!

Personally, I'm not fussed on home, and would just wish sony would concentrate on getting the basics (cross game invites, achievement score etc) done first before trying to do something elaborate like Home.

However, I DO hope home does well, as it will push MS to try something new and exciting.

I want HOME to change the future, in the sense that I would prefer free online play, because personally I don't believe in paying ?50 a year (or whatever it is) to play online.

Also saying that, I know very little about XBL, so can someone please outline what features you get from Gold that youdo not> get from Silver?
