Bypassing Swear Filter
We don't delete accounts at Neowin, simply logout and don't retur:):)Radish? That is a very irresponsible attitude from a site that tries to be at least somewhat professional. The fact that accounts will NOT be deleted should be made clear up front before signing up. I wish to have 2 accounts deleted (created a 2nd by mistake), but now I have some private information floating around on your site that I can't remove. Very, very unprofessional! maplecookie Veteran Posted April 22, 2008 Veteran Share Posted April 22, 2008 Wait, please back up and explain what you mean. We can ban the dup account you created by mistake if you'd like, but we can't just delete accounts because users choose they don't want them any longer. That would wreak havoc on our boards. If you want your 'mistake' account banned, please let us know which one that is. What sort of private information is floating around Neowin? Obviously if that's the problem, we *might* be able to fix that depending on what it is and you can keep your account still. If you choose not to use your other account at Neowin, simply log out as Radish stated. We don't force you to stay.

How is this a guarantee? The media has been FULL of reports for years of data being compromised. Even if Neowin themselves don't use the data, it IS there. All reputable online sites allow account deletion, including Google, Yahoo, AOL, etc etc etc... I've been going through old e-mails this week requesting account deletion for accounts I no longer use and Neowin is the first service to deny my request. kinetix63 Veteran Posted April 22, 2008 Veteran Share Posted April 22, 2008 The only personal information that we would hold about you is your e-mail address. If you'd rather we didn't even retain that, then you can update your e-mail address using My Controls in the top right hand corner to be an address that does not exist. That way the personal information is removed from our database - however, you would not be able to use the account again. We don't delete accounts because it would delete your forum posts along with it, which would just cause havoc and problems on our boards. If you're concerned we hold other personal information and it's not just your e-mail address you're worried about - send me a PM to discuss it and we'll figure out how to approach it. Bypassing Swear Filter
the unprofessional part is you put confidential information onto a random web site, now, who's fault is it really? The person who built the gun or the person who used it? An e-mail address is confidential. It may not be visible by regular users, but the site maintainer has a responsibility to delete when requested. I joined Neowin some time ago thinking it was at least a pseudo-professional site, only to find out that there is mostly bickering and complaining in the topics. (I've since learned the average age of users is somewhere in the late teens to early 20s so I'm not surprised.) There are much more professional tech sites available. As a result, I don't want any association with this service, but again, Neowin is the first site I have come across to deny this request.
MR_Candyman
perhaps you didn't understand. You can delete any data you don't want anybody to have from your profile. I also am of the belief that you are VERY paranoid without a reason.
Lee G. Veteran Posted April 22, 2008 Veteran Share Posted April 22, 2008 The confidential information can be removed. 1. Remove any information that can be removed off of your profile. 2. Just fill the e-mail address with one of those ten minute mail addresses, so you can confirm the e-mail address, and then the e-mail address is useless ten minutes later. 3. Then change your password to a load of random characters (copying and pasting in each field) - and then log out. Your account is completely useless, and there's no personal information stored on it at all. Why would you care, anyway?
napsterthe
Having an account on neowin is very dangerous. You can get your home address given out your credit cards cloned and your bank account hijacked. Also valuable information is sold to ID thief's. Neowin try's there best to give this to other people... (encase your wondering i was being sarcastic!) @ ****in****ed -> Grow up. :)

Neowin is a professional site, and your reasoning does not justify your request to have any account deleted. As far as the assumptions made that this site is as you put it "(I've since learned the average age of users is somewhere in the late teens to early 20's so I'm not surprised) is not at all accurate. Your statement about there being more professional tech sites available is filled with fallacies, partially accurate, but not dead on 100 accurate. I question your sincerity as to wether you seriously obtained any real demographics as to the actual users and their technical aptitude here on Neowin. I might surmise that your just p.o.'d that they would not comply with your request, and if you feel strongly about Neowin not being a site you will frequent, contribute to in a meaningful way, then I bid you a fairwell adieu.
