+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted February 29, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted February 29, 2008 Sales for Sony Corp.'s Playstation 3 increased Thurs. at Amazon.com upon restock of the $499 80GB SKU.By Fri. morning, orders for the high-end model increased 3,750 percent to rank as the No. 6 best-selling item in the Video Games division. The 80GB model, which includes an 80GB hard drive and built-in Wi-Fi, was previously out-of-stock at Amazon.com. The forecast for PS3 demand is bright following strong Jan. sales. The hardware moved 269,000 units during the month to outsell Microsoft Corp.?s Xbox 360 according to NPD Group Inc. Additionally, last week's Blu-ray victory may further increase sales now that the high-definition is the default option for consumers. Each PS3 sold includes a Blu-ray disc drive. Retailers have begun to offer discount incentives to drive the purchase of Blu-ray products. Amazon is offering up to 50 percent off select Blu-ray disc titles. Best Buy this week is touting Blu-ray and the Playstation 3 on its weekly circular. The retailer is offering an HDTV, PS3, game, and Blu-ray disc package for under $2,000. Sony on Tues. said that it will release a new Metal Gear SKU in late Q2 to include a 80GB PS3, DualShock 3 controller, and Metal Gear Solid 4 for $499.99. Tech Star
Great news for Sony, this means that sales are picking up, in return it means more games should also be sold.

EnzoFX
Very true, and this, without blockbuster titles... I've always stood by the fact that MOST ps2 owners haven't bought into any of the next gen consoles. That's a huge amount of people, that will think PS3 immediately, when they realize, that maybe they should get a new console. These people are not avid gamers like most people on here. By then, Sony would have closed the gap enough, feature wise, that it wouldn't mean much for them to go with the 360, especially if they realize they need to pay to play online
TruckWEB
I wonder how many customers buy the PS3 because it's a "cheap" Blu-Ray player only and will never buy any games for it. If that happens, it will hurt Sony in the long run, because they do make money on the software, they still don't make that much selling the PS3. As I said in another thread how will it hurt Sony? These people you talk about would never of bought a games console if Blu Ray was not in the PS3 so that would mean no sale for Sony anyway. Sony are getting a sale out of someone who otherwise, would never of invested in the PS brand - They may even get them interested in gaming in the long run. I don't see why people look for the negative in people buying for Blu Ray where it's clearly a positive for Sony.

But they make money on Blu-Ray movies, so it's still all good. Also, I'm pretty sure sales would spike up this much in the UK if only they brought out the 80GB console too!
