Just got my PS3

Recommended Posts

Hello guys yesterday I decided to finally buy a PS3 I'm not much of a gamer though, honestly I bought it more for its Blue Ray capabilities, I thought it was smarter to buy this instead of a regular BR Player so that when the new Blue Ray profile 2.0 comes out Im not stuck with a half absolete BR player, I do however plan to play some games every now and then of course, The PS3 I got was the 40GB ones, I have a few questions about it and hope some people can help me.

I 'm aware of the fact that PS2 games will not play on this player but Im curious to know if Sony might in the future upgrade the device so these games can be played on it, Any ideas or word from Sony on this?

Are there any other major downsides when getting the 40GB model instead of the 80GBs one that I should be aware of?

When running Vista I can play Videos from my computer on the PS3 without any problems however when under XP the player says it cannot find any media servers. any programs or guides that are recommended for XP that will do the job?

Is the Hard Drive on this model removable so that it can be upgrade with a bigger one?

I see the player gives you options to install other Operating Systems. what's this all about? can you have dual boots with this thing or does it mean removing everything that comes in there and basically use it as a computer with let's say Windows or Linux? which OSes are supported?

Thanks in advance.

The reason the PS3 40GB doesn't support PS2 games is because the lack of the Emotion Engine chip. I'd think it would be impossible to play PS2 games on a PS3 without the EE chip, later software upgrades might be able to allow emulation though. Not so sure, maybe, hopefully!

No downsides at all, except for the lack of backwards compatability and 2 less USB ports. Have my 40GB and I'm lovin' every bit of it.

For XP, you should be able to watch videos using WMP11. Not totally sure though, I've only tried it with Vista.

Yes, the hard drive is removable. If you wish to upgrade later on, just buy a laptop hard drive to stick in.

Not so sure about the operating systems. I know you can run Linux. Not that informed on it though.

Currently, you can only run variants of Linux are they were/are actively developed for the PPC. I haven't been able to come across a straight answer on whether not it'd be possible to load OSX on it (whether is illegal or not). With linux installed however, you won't have access to the gpu, so no intense 3d stuff I suppose.

And to stream media, you do need "media servers" which Vista has built-in to the OS. With XP, you have to go through WMP11. Or...... Tversity. There are others... Just use one to setup a media server (which i'm assuming you did on your vista box)

The official word on sony supporting the 40gb to play ps2 titles is: well simply, that they won't do it. It'll take too many resources, that it's not worth it for them and probably the consumer (though many will argue otherwise, those ppl are not the avg consumer). Though, it is theoretically possible. Just like its possible to write windows vista for the ppc, and install that on the ps3.... among lots of other things.... =P

Oh, and its a standard laptop sized (2.5in) SATA hard drive. Easily replaceable, sony provides the instructions.

Sony was advertising for some jobs recently that are based around PS2 emulation that was worded in such a way that it may mean that software only PS3's will benefit

"Implementing and improving software emulation for the PS/PS2/PSP/PS3 for the PS3 and the next generation system."
