NEVER85
I want to set up a dual-boot with Vista and Ubuntu, but when I start up the CD, after a couple of minutes I get this error message stating "The display server has shut down about 6 times in the last 90 seconds. It is likely something bad is going on.". I googled around but couldn't find a definitive answer. Anybody have any suggestions?

Xerxes
It could be Ubuntu is just not compatible with your hardware, it hates my old computer! (oddly enough, they used to get alone fine till recently..I suspect a hardware issue) my new machine runs it fine (well the LiveCD does anyway, I haven't installed it yet but it doesn't detect the network card...guess it's not supported). You could try as suggested before, run the LiveCD and see if you can run it in "Safe Graphics Mode" or "VGA Mode" or something similar to that, I can't remember what it was called. Doing that might let you boot to the desktop, if that fails it might just be your graphics card is just not supported. However, I barely know anything about Linux and so it's quite possible one of our more knowledgeable members, might have a better solution for you :)
markwolfe Veteran Posted March 5, 2008 Veteran Share Posted March 5, 2008 If the CD is giving you problems (sounds like X issues), and trying to select a "safe" mode like VGA doesn't work, Ubuntu has what they call an "Alternative" CD, which pretty much boots into the installer, rather than the Live environment that seems to be giving you problems. NEVER85
Did you try the LiveCD first to see if it accepted your video card? I thought they were one and the same? The file I downloaded was ubuntu-7.10-desktop-i386.iso. If the CD is giving you problems (sounds like X issues), and trying to select a "safe" mode like VGA doesn't work, Ubuntu has what they call an "Alternative" CD, which pretty much boots into the installer, rather than the Live environment that seems to be giving you problems. Thanks, mark. I'll try that. EDIT: I also tried running Ubuntu in safe graphics mode, and I got the same error message, so I'll get the alternative CD. I don't know why it would be a problem with my hardware as everything inside my machine is rather ordinary. My video card is an ATI Radeon X1300, nothing special. I'm downloading the alternative CD now and I'll let you know how it goes. Edited March 5, 2008 by MajinDark
Foub
I thought they were one and the same? The file I downloaded was ubuntu-7.10-desktop-i386.iso. It should be. If it worked under the LiveCD it should have booted up the first time after installing. Did you try the included "restricted" video driver for your card? All restricted means is that it isn't Open Source.
