ynnoj
Sony is expecting a big year for PlayStation 3 -- it might even turn a profit in the next fiscal year, according to SCEI President and CEO Kaz Hirai. The folks at PS3 Fanboy think it's got a fighting chance, and here are ten reasons we expect a better year for the console. +Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted March 5, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted March 5, 2008 The PS3 was never going to "fail". It's too strong a brand to exit the market just because of a sketchy launch, and a slow start up to software/firmware. Everyone is tired of waiting, but for all the moaning and groaning that has been done, everything will be "forgiven" once the firmware comes together, Home is released and we have seen some of the strong titles this year. Well if you still hold a "grudge" at that point, god help you, you grumpy old man :p It's the getting there that sucks, but 1 year is nothing out of a consoles cycle which should last 5 years +, and be supported for up to 8-10 years. We've already seen 1st year PS3 sales were not as bad as some think anyway, and actually pipped what the 360 done in it's 1st year. However what you have to remember was the 360 was coming off a slump from the xbox and therefore done really well in it's 1st year, the PS3 was coming off the PS2 and most people anticipated it selling like "hotcakes" where as it didn't. What im saying is even although it sold more than the 360 in it's 1st year, people expected it to do better and it should have/would have if not for all the launch issues/problems and outrageous pricing. +Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted March 5, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted March 5, 2008 The best is yet to come, the PSP started selling much better recently due to better games and fantastic firmware. Of course it is, no way in hell is the 1st year going to be crowned the best :p The 1st year was pretty bad, not terrible by any stretch, we've seen some good firmware updates/games this year, but it didn't meet expectations with the delays/poor ports of certain titles. The PS3 will sell more than it did in it's 1st year this year, meaning I expect sales to be between 20-25 million after 2 years. (if it sold 10m in 1st year, I can see it doing 10-15m in 2nd year - Maybe even more with Blu Ray win on top of things like Home/anticipated exclusives). Which will put it ahead of what the 360 done in 2 years - It actually sold less in it's 2nd year, than in it's 1st. Sold about 7~8 million in it's second year. This is why I think MS need a rethink of Live, make it free, cut your console prices and when things like GTA4 come out, even existing PS brand only gamers will think wait, both offer free online multiplayer, both are identical in play, and for a slight advantage GTA4 360 has DLC... ps. Now that you've mentioned the PSP, has anyone tried GOW yet? It's "out there" :shiftyninja:

troist
Some of those reasons are pretty much exactly why I think the PS3 will finally get somewhere this year. At the moment it has no real AAA titles (although I guess Uncharted could be considered AAA, it was pretty awesome)... it has some nice games, but nothing with the recognition of Halo 3 or Mario. With MGS this year it'll finally have a major game. I'm still not convinced Home will help turn around the PS3's sales... I reckon its success will rely heavily on how Sony market it but I just see it as Second Life for the PS3... <snipped> Edited March 5, 2008 by Colin-uk

C_Guy
In order for the PS3 to be relevant "again" it would have had to be relevant already at some point. Sadly for Sony it never was and probably never will be. Cut your losses, learn from your mistakes, and if you have any money left over, try again. Take some notes from Microsoft and Nintendo. They can show you how it's done.
HawkMan
Why are you linking to an article linking to the article and not directly ? and what a useless article. 1: Blu Ray won, umm so what ? I'm buying a gamign console not a HD player, call me when I canbuy a BD player betwen 100-150$ or as an addon for my 360, I have no interest in having it pushed on me to sel the fomrat and console. for a gaming console this is pointless and an irrelevat point. 2: Good PSN games... err and ... how does that make the PS3 a better choice than anything else... I got that on my 360 too... 3: First party DLC support.... WTF... is that even a reason... come on... I'll just stick to my 360 then wich have both god first and third party DLC support in that case :p 4: DS3.... err yeah... wow what a great reason, you can buy the same controller you had for the PS2... except with crappy motion support (Seriusly gamepads aren't made for motion contorl it just don't feel natural, if you want motion control you go the Nintendo way and make a controller designed to for this type of control). quite stretch to get another reason I'd say... 5: Value for my money ? no Backwards compatibility, removed the memory card reader that used to be there, forcing me to pay for a BD player I don't necesarily want. I DON'T CARE IF iT'S THE CHEAPEST BLU-RAY PLAYER, I want a damn gaming console. it's funny how they keep pushing this, Sony needs to decide if it's a BD player or a gaming console. and the game developers agree. 6:regular firmware updates... come on... now where' geeting really stretchy o the reasonings, firstly FW udpates on the PS3 in itself aren't exctly a cakewalks compared to the competition, and it could equally be argued they are too many too often, unlike for exmple the twice a year REGULAR FW updates on the 360, a schedule that not only allows better testing of the updtes before release, but allows them to design the new features to better work together both technically and in design and fucntion. 7: Remote play may be the first real reason.. though.. not that usefull for one. seems a lot more gimmicky than usefull. and in todays CO2 conscius world, should they be promoting keeping yoru consoles on, even in sleep mode, all the time just so you can turn it on and tream stuff from it everywhere. ... it ould sem better to keep your games and music on memory cards I think. 8: OH COME ON!!! this is not a reason, it's a game. hardly the end of the world not having the console with MGS4 I think. sheesh... 9: see above... 10: yeah again, I bought the console to play games, hence "game console"... I communicate with my friends when playing the games" so on the whole they had one real reason, and even that wasn't really that big a deal... at least they live up to their name of PS3 fanboy... I wish PS3 and 360 games would be mostly cross paltform and XBL and PSN could talk with each other down the future and maybe we wouldn't have such idiot fanboy crap. +Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted March 5, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted March 5, 2008 (edited) what a useless article For some it shows the hope that 2008 is going to be better than 2007. Unfortunately or fortunately depending on the person you are, you'll no doubt be seeing a lot of "How the PS3 will have a good 2008" articles around Q1/Q2 of 2008 - Main reason being people are comparing what they think will happen this year to the poor year of 2007. 1: Blu Ray won, umm so what ? I'm buying a gamign console not a HD player, call me when I canbuy a BD player betwen 100-150$ or as an addon for my 360, I have no interest in having it pushed on me to sel the fomrat and console. for a gaming console this is pointless and an irrelevat point. This is a very important point for the masses. Individuals may not have an interest in Blu Ray, but you cannot write off Blu Ray in the PS3 for every person out there as you don't "need" it. Many have and will continue to be enticed into buying a PS3 as it is currently the best choice right now for a Blu Ray player. This will undoubtedly help the PS3 in 2008. 2: Good PSN games... err and ... how does that make the PS3 a better choice than anything else... I got that on my 360 too... It doesn't necessarily mean it's better than anything. Not everything in the gaming world has to be this vs that vs this vs that. Having a good quality PSN selection just benefits the end user... simple as that. PSN and XBLA offerings are very unique as well as similar in some respects. 3: First party DLC support.... WTF... is that even a reason... come on... I'll just stick to my 360 then wich have both god first and third party DLC support in that case :p Again no need to justify a good thing for PSN/PS3 users by immediately bringing in the 360. I hope 1st and 3rd parties continue to bring out worthy DLC. However I wouldn't base much around this point, im pretty strongly opinionated about developers charging for everything and not offering a good balance of free content - Charging for every car/map pack you release is a little harsh, especially at a couple of ? a pop. I'd like more developers to embrace user created content as a priority BEFORE DLC. Their DLC is always going to have the upperhand in terms of polish, but let the users create as well if you can. 4: DS3.... err yeah... wow what a great reason, you can buy the same controller you had for the PS2... except with crappy motion support (Seriusly gamepads aren't made for motion contorl it just don't feel natural, if you want motion control you go the Nintendo way and make a controller designed to for this type of control). quite stretch to get another reason I'd say... PS3 owners want rumble back, and believe it or not some of us are quite "excited" to see it again. Not that it's NEEDED, but games like MGS and GT aren't the same without it. I've seen some people on these forums "refuse" to buy a PS3 without DS3 bundled. One reason the MGS4 bundle will do well. Value for money is subjective. Obviously for you you'd prefer to see BC "before" Blu Ray. Sony have taken a gamble on trying to please the majority of the market with lower prices at the expense of keeping Blu Ray, hard drive, wifi and ditching what theyfeel> to be the least important - BC. The way I see it is, BC is the ONLY thing above that can be added with software/firmware update - You can't add a Blu Ray drive/Hard drive or Wifi with a free SOFTWARE update. So do I think they got it right? Yeah in my book cost was a MASSIVE problem in 2006/2007, and had to be rectified asap. Removing components was the quickest way to get it down in price, and I think sacrificing BC had to come before sacrificing other hardware components. However I do realise this is subjective, and I don't see anything wrong with others now feeling they won't purchase a PS3 till BC is back - That's a fair enough gripe - But from Sonys standpoint they see you in the minority and they'll believe their move pleased the majority. PS3 FW updates are NOT implemented effeciently I agree with that. There is no reason why we should be downloading the whole shabang everytime we update - Sony get patching instead. However the amount of PS3 firmware updates last year while overwhelming did make it promising to see Sony working hard. Things will slow down this year, but hopefully we'll still get 4-5+ major updates a year. Remote play is actually unique and a great feature to have. Smart move in linking your handheld and console in a good way. The fact a PSP is used "in Home" will also help support the PSP brand. Please don't go on about standby mode though, nearly every electrical device has a standby - Not a problem associated with Sony only. I've used my PSP in my friends/around the country on remote play - It's "nice" to be able to access your movies at home, and play remote play enabled PSN games. 8: OH COME ON!!! this is not a reason, it's a game. hardly the end of the world not having the console with MGS4 I think. sheesh... ? How powerful is the Halo brand for MS? How powerful is the Mario brand for Nintendo? Would it be the end of the world having no Halo on a console? Probably not, but you can sure bet your money the Xbox brand would be nowhere near as popular. Same with PS, so daft remark. 9: see above... See above. 10: yeah again, I bought the console to play games, hence "game console"... I communicate with my friends when playing the games" Different strokes for different folks. Home is anticipated, and a lot of people want it. so on the whole they had one real reason, and even that wasn't really that big a deal... at least they live up to their name of PS3 fanboy...> If I had a ? for everytime I've seen someone on these forums say something about the xxxfanboy.com sites I'd be rich. They are part of joystiq, "dodgy" naming maybe, but there is a Wii/360/PC/WoW-fanboy.com The idea is they only display the PS3/360/PC/Wii news from joystiq so you can read only the news you want to. p.s I had to bold a few quotes as I ran out of my quote allowanc:laugh:h: Edited March 5, 2008 by Audioboxer

Dale
like i wrote previously, I chose xbox 360 for xbox live with my best friends, but I felt that the Playstation 3 had better value as a blu ray player, and a list of quality titles in the future. It was a hard choice but xbox 360 still won me over.. just by the edge of my teeth though. but I do agree with the posted article very much. Emn1ty
I think the PS3 will have a bad initial lifespan, but pick up in the later years. This is simply because of the price as well as lack of games. I know I won't be buying a PS3 until the top of the line model is $300 or less. There is just no reason to justify it, imo. There are few games out that I am interested in, and I personally hate the UI on the system. Hopefully later models will have a more up to date BR player as well. MGS4 is also not that big of an influence to me, nor does it seem like one to my friends. They say they are really looking forward to the game, but all of them have yet to even think of purchasing a PS3 for it. I think MGS4 may push a few sales, but not many.
