Borbus
Since we don't actually have a forum for games I thought this would be the best place to put it. I have made a petition for Epic to release the GNU/Linux client for UT3. http://www.petitiononline.com/ut3linux/petition.html I think this is important for GNU/Linux users even if you are not planning to purchase the game because I think we would all like the Microsoft monopoly on the OS market to end. This kind of software being available for GNU/Linux shows that it is a serious operating system for all users and not just technically minding people. If you have seen my thread on the "Games for Windows" forum you will know that I believe Microsoft is trying to maintain their monopoly by keeping games exclusive to Windows. But my opinion of Microsoft aside, the bottom line is I just want to play UT3 on my PC and I don't think I am alone. Thanks. :)
HawkMan
I think UE3 has reachd a level of complexity where maintaining both D3D and OGL compatibility just isn't feasable. and both on performance and features, DX wins out, and it's also where practically all of their userbase is except for console users, so I don't think it's all that feasable. on the other hand the PS3 version uses OGL, but then again, that's a console and is very different to program for in any case. The question fo Epic is basically if it's economically feasable to spend time on a linux client, and based on the number of users it would have... it just isn't there's no real return on it. FlibbyFlobby
Is there any point in petitioning them for something they have already said they are making and will release when its done? They ran into legal issues with middleware on the Linux dedicated server if I remember rightly, for all we know there could be more issues like this with the nix client. Besides, Epic always deliver, so just keep your knickers on and wait a bit longer. :p
Borbus
I believe the GNU/Linux port was actually ready (according to the guy who is responsible for it) but it was just delayed by some 3rd party political stuff. Unreal 3 was designed to be platform independent so I really don't think there are any technical reasons for not releasing the port. Direct X does not beat OpenGL on performance, as far as I know they are very comparable, with Nvidia even performing better with OpenGL. If there is a technical reason that the port cannot be released I wish Epic would say something and not leave us waiting. edit: ziadoz: it has been 100 days since UT3 was released and therefore 100 days since Epic first said they would release the GNU/Linux client. With no word from Epic (but there has been word from Aegia saying basically "it's not us") for months it seems like they have decided not to do it. markwolfe Veteran Posted March 5, 2008 Veteran Share Posted March 5, 2008 Aren't they already in the process of doing this? I don't see the point of this partition, based on what I have last heard from Epic.
Borbus
The last word from Epic that I'm aware of was around November 20th when they said that UT3 for GNU/Linux was caught in a legal middleware situation which is causing the delay. Since then there has been nothing. No updates whatsoever. The only related update is that Aegia have said that they are not causing the delay, Aegia has earlier stated that it would be trivial to port their engine/drivers to GNU/Linux and OSX. This petition is to show Epic that there is demand for the game still even though it has been delayed by over 100 days.
