Linux has better Windows compatibility than Vista....

Recommended Posts

I found the link for this article over at WineHQ. Warning it is a bit biased.

Don?t Screw With My Games:

I have been using Vista for well over a year now (since Beta 1). Of course Vista is slow, its bloated (over 10x the size of XP), aero kills system performance (even though this should be done on the video card), networking is pathetically slow, etc etc. We all know Vista sucks.

But recently my blood has been set to a rolling boil by the fact that most of my games just don?t work in Vista. At all. Its so bad that out of spite I have decided to make a list of games that work better in Linux under Wine than in Vista. These are games that were originally written to run in Windows XP, are broken in Vista, but magically work in Linux.......

The rest of the article

Crappy article, though I would agree with a statement that Linux isn't as incompatible with Windows apps as many would lead you to believe. Wine does a good job with a few random apps I tried. But, in general I prefer native Linux apps.

This article seems to specifically select apps that are not working right in Vista, and showing they do work in Linux. A nice demonstration, but not proof of overall better compatibility.

Holy crap, what a biased article (also very poorly written, and not very true).

(@author) nice try linux geek, you fail.

Biased indeed. The first freeware game he mentions did start without black screens. Want to bitch at someone? Bitch to Nvidia for half assing drivers for your GeForce FX card. Now what about games that work in Vista but not Wine/Cedega? I'd probably bet a few of his compatibility problems would've been cured through the many compatibility updates released through Windows Update.

Conclusion: article and writer should be relocated to a sinking failboat.

Linux is NOT compatable with any Windows Games. WINE is compatable with them, WINE isnt linux

Well if you talk to anyone with any experience in sys development, and no offense to younger crowd here, but probably older than 27 - 28, you would get the same answer "Vista is over bloated".

Although the article sounds biased, especially with the statement "We all know Vista sucks", is not really that far from the truth.

I will not go into details because I've done that in the past... Use search.

Cheers

Linux IS compatible with UT2k4, right on the same CD. With Doom, and others, I am sure. Without wine.

And you drawing up a distinction between "Linux" the kernel and running an app in "Linux" the full system (Kernel, GNU OS, X and some graphical desktop environment) is being a bit pedantic, don't you think?

Overall, if the article stated "Linux can run some apps that have problems in Vista" and dropped the flame-bait, the article wouldn't be too bad. Instead it is littered with flame-bait (that many here have bitten into and are getting their bloodpressure elevated), and has an inaccurate title, which just sets the wrong tone.

Well I just tried all the games in that artical and they all work just no hanging the OS. Sound like the author should give his 486 with 4mg ram the boot and get a system that can run the games he wants to play. On linux the only game i did try was Soldat and it even worked quite well was not slow at all. Civ 4 works just fine with the latest patch I can't say what his problems was.

What's a troll like you doing here?

Looks like a whole murder of Vista crows showed up. What things not shiny enough over at your sections?

Well, I did warn that it was biased.

BTW, I do run UT2k4 natively under Linux. Looks nice. I have NFS: Most Wanted installed under WINE and it runs pretty good as well. I've even tried NFS: Carbon and it worked ok. I see that with some tweaks one can even get NFS: ProStreet to run under it also.

Yeah. you can also play Half Life 2 and Counterstrike Source you just need to install first steam using wine. There are few articles on how to install steam using wine... Google it.
