40GB PS3, any compromises?

Recommended Posts

For 40GB owners, seeing that the system made a number of hardware compromises to offer the low price tag, do you see these compromises as having any effect on your PS3 experience (of course other than the HDD space)?

not at all, most cameras that take a memory card use USB anyway eliminating the need for memory card readers.

2 Usb's is enough for my GH3 and singstar stuff so fine with me, if i want to use linux (rarely) i unplug one and plug a keyboard in lol.

Have a PS2 for PS2 games.

the 40GB model was my first Playstation so i dont have any use for PS2 games. my roomate has a ton of PS2 games, but also has his PS2 sitting there collecting dust. i dont need the extra hard drive space, at least right now. i plugged in my card reader to the usb slot so i dont really need the built in card reader...

so it was the best model for me. i didnt need the better model(s) b/c i simply want to play some PS3 games and watch BDs.

Not one bit, I didn't really need anything from the other models relaly.

Card reader - I have a pen drive, and a PC, so that's sorted.

Backwards Compatibility - I have my Ps2 Sitting under a different TV in my room if I want to use it.

Only 2 USB slots - I only use them for charging the controller or sticking in a pen drive for files.

Only think I would miss would be the Card reader - often when I get home from an event its nice to watch the photos taken on big screen with friends/family

Compromises? None. My 40gb is significantly quieter and more reliable then my 60gb ever was. My 40gb rarely locks up and I can barely ever hear it. My 60gb locked up frequently and the fan was louder then any movie at even the highest speaker volume... and no I'm not exaggerating. :)

The only thing I miss is playing GT4, but that didn't look that great on my 60gb anyway. I'd rather play it on my PS2 via component cables... :D

im also thinking buying a ps3, and was hesitant on what model to get, but this thread has definitly pushed me towards the 40gig. (dont care about ps2 games, and it being more quiet and reliable are definite pluses!) i only want it for games, BD, and an upconverting dvd player.

do you think i would ever run out of space though? i dont download movies or tv shows onto my ps3 or anything like that, but im sure ill dl a few PSN games, and GT5 prologue etc...do i have to worry about space? (i know worse comes to worse i can throw in a nother HD)

Yes I do . MY blueray drive in my 40gig ps3 that i bought jan 4 died 4 days ago. I only used it 3 times to play blue ray movies. I feel they used cheaper parts to get the price lower.

I don't think so, they just cut some stuff out and put cheaper to make* components in (not cheaply made). I think unfortunatly you got unlucky :(

I have a 40Gb PS3 and it is great and I wouldn't really say I've compromised at all. I can fully enjoy everything it has to offer and the things it does lack are of little concern to me;

no media card reader - I don't need it and if I did, I got a USB one I can plug in.

missing 2x USB ports - 2 is just fine and I can always extend it with a USB hub if I really need more.

smaller HDD - hardly an issue, it's user upgradable and laptop HDDs are fairly cheap these days anyway.

no PS2 software support - That is what my PS2 is for! anyway, I got the PS3 to play PS3 games after all ;)

Unless you desperately want to/need to play PS2 games on your PS3, then get the 60/80Gb model, otherwise go for the 40Gb model as it's more affordable and you still get the full PS3 experience

* = By "cheaper to make" I mean they are using smaller components that are cheaper to produce, for example the 40Gb model used the 60nm Cell processor (60Gb using the 95nm Cell) which is cheaper to make then the 95nm one.

The one thing that irks me is the no BC with PS2 games, and I can't find an 80GB around here... I'll eventually get one anyway, in fact I hope to get one very soon, it just is disappointing to me.

40gb is more than enough, usually the fun in the PSN demos lasts only a maximum of 2-3 weeks and its time to delete the demo.

+ for upconverting, movies look amazing on the PS3 via HDMI upconverting... you need a HDMI for good looking movies btw, i didn't know that until after.

I've forgotten all about my PS2 collection, I used to love FIFA 07, but ever since I got my hands on FIFA 08, I don't even remember that FIFA 07 exists. Next-gen games are simply amazing, and until you play them first hand, you won't be convinced. :D

I use my PS3 40gb for a wide variety of media/entertainment and find the space more than adequate.

The 40gb is spot on for me.

Theres not enough content on PSN to fill 40gb so you have no worries there, and it's never updated so it's basically future proofed.

As for the other hardware comprimises, can't say i've noticed, the machine does the job nicely.

Please, for the love of god, just sell your PS3 already - you obviously hate it..

The store is updated every week, some updates bigger than others - now shoosh

If you ever fill the 40GB drive, you can always swap it out for a bigger laptop drive.

I'm happy with my 40GB purchase, no regrets :)

IMO the 40GB model could use some more USB ports. Even my 60GB could use another one on the back.

Yesterday I noticed that you can run out of ports in no time. Keyboard, Microphones, portable drive, charge controller... with only 2 ports you just have to compromise...

BTW, anyone tried an usb hub?

Are you saying that the component cables don't look good?

My TV only has DVI (used by HTPC), RCA, and Component, no HDMI

Component cables do just fine, just stay away from composite :)
