Boz
PS2 is pretty huge thing.. and yes PS3 40 feels significantly cheaper overall with what it offers.. I have 60gb first one..and I just bought a friend of mine for birthday present the 40gb PS3. Though it works the same, there's this feeling of everything being a bit cheaper. I can't really explain it.. and of course then I constantly get dissapointed when I want to show him how PS2 games look so much better upscaled to 1080p (God of War 1 and 2) but he can't do it. Lack of USB ports is huge thus you have to get the hub. Blu-Ray drive for some reason feels slower. I mean I might be biased but the overall feeling for my 60gb is much more complete console and sturdier. The 40gb version seems like butchered one. Next addition will be PlayTV - The first device for me that needs to stay connected 24/7. Everything else, cameras, charge cable, USB drive, USB stick can all be connected/disconnected when needed. Plus, as above if you MUST have more than 2x devices connected at once, buy a USB hub. Hardly "huge". 360/Wii both have 2 USB ports.

It is huge for the price you pay.. who's comparing Xbox 360 and Wii? We are talking about PS3 60 vs PS3 40. You really need to become more objective man. You bleed Sony. Compared to 60gb version 40gb version IS CHEAPER build and USB ports are missing which we quickly realized with RockBand, not to mention the convenience of the card. Putting a card in is 10 times more convenient then whiping out USB cable every time you want to connect a camera. To OP, yes, you feel that there are things lacking from PS3 40gb but it kind of really starts to bother you if you had or used 60gb version. You can just see they had to skimp out on parts to drop the price.
timothy
I'm quite happy with my PS3 40Gb. Only thing I would like to have is the PS2 support, but I don't miss it that much that I would dislike my ps3. And the 40gb space? I will probably upgrade it in the far away future if my system demands it and put the 40Gb drive in a little USB case. But for now storage space ain't such a big a deal, I actually use this to transfer files a lot faster from my PC/Xbox360 to PS3: (yes, my old 20gb Xbox360 HDD works fine with the data transfer cable on a PS3!) PS2 is huge over two aspects: the game library and the PS2 itself (not everyone owns a slim). So I guess removing back compat is huge when you think about it. Having no BC is the huge compromise, not missing USB ports. They are minor convience issues, and easily remedied by a a hub ect - For a low cost. Or remedied by not keeping things plugged in you don't need plugged in 24/7. No BC cannot be remedied at all, and your only option is a high cost alternative - Buy a PS2. Compared to 60gb version 40gb version IS CHEAPER build Everyone knows that, it has components missing to make it cheaper to make, cheaper to sell. It has pluses though such as running on 65nm, instead of 95nm = Cooler and quieter. Plus the wireless adapter has a higher gain in the 40GB model = Better signal. PS2 is huge over two aspects: the game library and the PS2 itself (not everyone owns a slim). So I guess removing back compat is huge when you think about it. I wasn't talking about BC when I replied to Boz. I was talking about USB ports.

randomnut
Please, for the love of god, just sell your PS3 already - you obviously hate it..The store is updated every week, some updates bigger than others - now shoosh pfft, I don't hate my ps3, i'm just stating the truth. IMO it's awesome as a blu ray player but as a gaming machine both it and PSN horribly fails.

It doesn't horribly fail. I like the new movie trailers on the store. I have a dozen. And the games it does have are great. Most of them anyways. Xerxes
PSN is never updated = not the truthPSN is updated every week = the truth Oh and care to share your apparently extensive knowledge on LIVE and PSNs infrastructure? :o I think that is subjective to where you live, here in Australia your lucky if the PSN Store is updated monthly and when they do update it with new content, often it might just be a few themes here and there and possibly a demo. Xbox Live Marketplace, even in Australia is keeps relatively up to date with the rest of the world (just the Video Marketplace that is not doing so well outside NA). I wouldn't say PSN was really bad, but unless you live in Japan/North America (not sure about Europe?) content is a little scarce. I'm sure in time things will (eventually) improve however. One thing that puzzles me is how come so many people hold BC as the holy grail of features? why? I used to think it was great but then I got over it, I still have my PS2 if I have the urge to play one of my PS2 games. Also for me the ~$200* price difference between the 40Gb and 60Gb model (which is hard to find) is not worth the extra USB ports, PS2 BC and Media Card Reader, the PS2 is under $100 if not cheaper and other lost features can be cheaply added back on. If people wanna argue till they are blue in the face that the 60/80Gb model is the only model people should be getting, be my guest as I'm not gonna try and stop you but doesn't mean I agree with it either. That is my 2 cents take with a grain of salt. * = all currency is in AUD$
