+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted March 7, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted March 7, 2008 It has been quite some time since we?ve heard a peep from Sony about their London-based crime drama franchise, The Getaway. The series third iteration (fourth if you count the PSP edition) for the Playstation 3 was shown at E3 2005, then at E3 2006, but not a word of it since. Though the same demo was shown both years, The Getaway PS3?s rendering of bustling London was incredible, and confirmed to be real-time. Truly a sight to behold on the then-debuting PS3 hardware. Many feared The Getaway PS3 was shelved or delayed into oblivion because of the complete lack of coverage of the game since E3 2006. Fast forward to 2008, the game?s hazy release date. Denofgeek recently interviewed Katie Ellwood, one of the writers of The Getaway and its sequel. Ellwood reaffirms that the game is still in production and that Sony is toiling away on the gritty, open-world franchise. The 2008 release date was not mentioned. Not much else info is given, as the interview actually pertains to the subject of games approaching cinematic appeal, through visuals, storytelling, and believability. Ellwood also hints at a feature film in the works that is being drafted by the Team Soho writers. Please give us the game first! The Getaway debuted on the PS2 in 2003 and received lackluster reviews. The game was clunky and bug-ridden, though it was more like a proof-of-concept: games as cinema. Evoking wise-guy British crime films and not pulling any punches regarding violence, language, and drama, the game had flair. Digital actors and superb presentation made the franchise stand out against a cartoony-in-comparison Grand Theft Auto 3. A sequel was made, Black Monday, but it too suffered from many of the same issues as its predecessor. The Getaway was severely limited by its technology, but given the power of the PS3, I don?t think it?ll be an issue this time around. Release dates are as slippery as a greasy pig, but The Getaway PS3 will be an intense thriller, no doubt. Let?s hope to catch the bacon sooner rather than later. Ricardo Gil
Never played this game, but the '06 presentation grabbed my attention (graphics wise)... hope this one actually lives up to expectations.
soniqstylz
Actually, I really liked the first one.
+Dick Montage Subscriber² Posted March 7, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted March 7, 2008 I found the first one to be one of the most realistically voice acted games ever.
williamhook
London in HD on the PS3...need I say more? :p
troist
I wonder how big and detailed it'll be. I'd be more interested in just exploring the city than actually playing the game :p I remember the original was pretty good, but with a blu-ray disc I'd expect it to be a hell of a lot bigger. PL_ Veteran Posted March 9, 2008 Veteran Share Posted March 9, 2008 The first one was great. Nice and gritty.
Corris Veteran Posted March 9, 2008 Veteran Share Posted March 9, 2008 I really enjoyed the first two, somewhat more than GTA at times, London in the games felt far more realistic than any of the cities in the GTA games in my opinion, while I have never been to London, it felt like I would imagine. And I know the cities while based on real ones aren't real at all in GTA, but they just never really felt that alive. I will defiantly be buying the next Getaway game, even better with some on-line modes too. :D
+Dick Montage Subscriber² Posted March 9, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted March 9, 2008 while I have never been to London Dude, the coolest metropolitan capital is about a 4 hour train ride away or less. You know it's your REAL capital ;) JK mate!
Commodore Max
This game really looks great, and I hope the PS3 can solve it's problems.

Am I getting mocked by someone from Leicester? that's rich. :p I kid of course, I unfortunately haven't been many places in the UK, though I am starting off with Scotland in a few weeks time. :p I say make a game based in Wales, Sheep mini-game FTW? :p
DodgeViper
I'll buy a PS3 just for the Getaway. I'm a Londoner so I won't even need to bother with the map. I hope they can get the east end into the game, but I doubt it's possible to get the whole of London into the game.
Mike
i found the first one looked amazing but sucked for controls which killed it for me :/
+Dick Montage Subscriber² Posted March 9, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted March 9, 2008 Am I getting mocked by someone from Leicester? that's rich. Well played! They should do "Getaway: Leicester" - drive around in a black, tinted, 10 year old, 5 series Bimmer that your uncle sold you, plaing "Desi Vibes 10" through a tinny system with 1 sub. No need to scan all the building fronts, just photograph 1 rolled down shutter with grafitti all over it. But you can't drive anywhere because all the roads have been dug up for the last 10 months. You'd walk, but seriously, you're only going to get accosted by students bothering you about Oxfam.
PL_ Veteran Posted March 9, 2008 Veteran Share Posted March 9, 2008 I say make a game based in Wales, Sheep mini-game FTW? :p It'd have to be a PS3 exclusive, only the PS3 has the power to render nothing but hills for miles and miles! :p
Jimmy0
I remember playing the first one a little bit, but I remember it being quite hard ... probably because I was quite young at the time. But would still like to see this. (Y)

I hope they can get the east end into the game, but I doubt it's possible to get the whole of London into the game. I think they wouldn't dare come in here and do research as they would most likely get robbed down to their boxer shorts  I can imagine the main character in-game walking down East London getting robbed by fifteen hoodies all about 14 - 16 years of age with ankle tags and an ASBOs they wear as badge's and laugh at you and the police who don't dare to do nothing because the hoodies have guns and knifes bigger then their own illegitimate kids :p If they plan on getting gritty they best include East London especially Hackney and Tower Hamlets both right next to each other and both voted worst places to live in the whole of The Queen's United Kingdom former being first latter being second and is unfortunately where I live :/
DodgeViper
It'll definitely be great to see east london. The problem is the game will be based in the city so I don't know if they're going to feature the east. I hope they don't teleport you to different locations around london at the beginning of a mission, the whole point is to explore the city and getting to places. Maybe they can have a part where you land at city airport and you have to go down to stratford or hackney meet some new guy for a few missions. I don't expect to drive from Piccadilly to tower hamlets as it's just too much, featuring the gritty areas of east london and the city would work out better. They could also do missions where you have to work to gain something. Maybe you're character has to get an interview from one of the companies in canary wharf. That is stretching it too far, although it would be exciting to see all of that featured in the game to create a contrast between the neighboring areas.
