Spending less....

Recommended Posts

I find that since I switched to Linux that I'm spending far less on my system than I did before. Has anyone else found this out as well?

An OS should make using your hardware easier, not buying more hardware to make the OS work better.

Much of it is probably from using free alternatives, like OO.o instead of MSO.

Although it does seem true that hardware is usable for longer time, as older equip still performs well enough, especially if you choose a lighter WM (and I love fluxbox anyway, so use it on my new Core2 Duo even though it would run full Gnome like lightning)

the thing that usually encourages people to upgrade hardware on a Windows PC is usually the games. since Linux has far fewer games than Windows, people tend to spend less on the game-related hardware.

also as markjensen said, open alternatives instead of paid programs help.

either that or you're losing interest in PCs due to Linux</joke> :p

Right...i wish the same were true in the enterprise market. Try not to get all elitist when switching your desktop environment from windows to nix. Your comment about the hardware compatibility made me laugh because until a couple of years ago, getting linux to work properly with drivers of other hardware was insanely difficult. Get off ubuntu and try a "real" distro or BSD/unix and tell me getting your hardware working properly is easier than it would be if you were to use windows.

Its not that games I was thinking about, but in regards to hardware. I buy very few games as it is. If I wanted to mainly play games I would get a console instead. Since I switched over I'm truly enjoying using my system than I ever did under Windows. I no longer dread turning the system on each day.

and you start doing real work at more length, dont pop up into games as often etc and dont need to get hyper when sharing files via friends disk etc.

I use fedora and its easier to use that in vista (specially network part as I dont have to ponder on, when vista is figuring out network part and takes huge time).

I run vista and upgrade every 5 year or so...

Install vista and get back in the game mate :)

Why on earth would he do that, Switching from Windows to Linux is the best thing i ever did!

And i think most people would feel the same way. :)

It may have taken 5 years, but it is still in beta, crow..... In other words its still unfinished, but that has to do with the fact that its primarily filled with bloat. Its like an expensive sports car that spends most of its time in the shop getting repaired, but hey it looks nice.

Why is it if anyone goes to the Windows section and says something against Windows they are censored, but if they come to the Linux section and do the same against Linux they are left alone by the mods?

And I use Debian Etch... it is insanely easy to use and keep up to date. I've also tried PC-BSD.... fabulous and very easy to use.

Hmmm... this is trolling, sir. Not tolerated in our area or on Neowin

Well, I usually mod this area and I say that I carry a pretty mean warn stick........ :shiftyninja:

There's a difference between expressing a dissenting opinion and trolling. It can be hard to tell the difference for sure.

If you think something crosses the line and is "trolling", best thing to do is report it. Otherwise posting about it tends to drive a thread off-topic.

Like now. :ermm:

You do if you want to get Vista to run as good as the same desktop features as in Linux. :) That's the answer the crows give everyone when they are having great problems with Vista is to buy the latest and greatest..... You don't have to do that under Linux.

I have the pleasure of having to use a variety of operating systems (FreeBSD, CentOS, Debian, Vista, 2000, XP, Server 2000-2008, Gentoo, SuSE, etc) so dont think my last post was made in spite of your elitist attitude.

I have no problems with Vista and I'm running on a 3 year old computer that definatly wasn't the latest and the greatest at the time. But, of course, you're not gonna need to buy new hardware that often because you're not gaming. I mean, what are you doing that might even come close to being hardware intensive?

Could you explain why Ubuntu is not a "real" distro?

Ubuntu, a long with other distros that popularized linux for desktop usage, was unpopular for the die hard nix user, usually someone who used BSD, Gentoo, Slackware, etc. Hell, I'd use Ubuntu server over CentOS if CPanel would support it.

Perish the thought.... What you seem to not have observed is that I hadn't really singled out a particular distro of Linux, only that I was spending less SINCE I switched. I asked this of others on here who also switched over to Linux, not just those who had switched to Ubuntu. So, maybe you should check your own attitude before accusing others..... BTW, I have around 25 years experience with using many different OSes as well. As a desktop OS I find Linux to be far superior to Windows in many ways.

Its because its elitist , apparently. ;)

Which Vista are you running?

I have games on my system, Windows games under WINE. Plus there are more and more Linux ports of recent Windows games as well.

BTW, don't many games that work fine under Xp, but many of the very same games won't even run under Vista, or require newer hardware to play the same games? Linux can also run the very same sort of desktop effects as Aero, plus much much much more, and still not "push the system" as the same effects would under Vista. In this regard regular Ubuntu is the same as Vista Ultimate and yet Ubuntu still uses far fewer resources.

Ubuntu almost uses about 30% less resources then Vista Ultimate did on my system.

I just had an elitist thought, maybe you could post this question over in the Linux Server/BSD... section for all of those who have switched over to those OSes as well like I have done here in the Linux CLIENT section?

Thats exactly how it is at times, unfortunately. Congrats to you if you find that you spend less money with linux. Its a great, stable OS that has many advantages and disadvantages, as the same with osx and windows.

Anyway, ill discontinue posting here since the "scarecrow" (whatever that means) is up. Keep up the fight but lose the pretentious attitude.

True, but some have more so than others. I'm well aware that Linux is far from being perfect, but it doesn't have to be perfect to be better.

A crow is easily impressed by shiny things. Vista is shiny.

You are mistaking satisfaction with being pretentious. If I had wanted to be pretentious I would have posted this in the general discussion area, but I posted it in the Linux CLIENT section instead. If I'm being elitist or pretentious, as you assert, than so is everyone else here who has switched from Windows to Linux.
