DPyro
I believe theres a way to fix it yourself, something about the lens or whatever gets stuck? EDIT: Or use rubbing alcohol and cotton swab to clean the lens. Also try vacuuming the console. EDIT2: This is the explanation from some German who fixed his console (sorry if it doesn't make too much sence): On the left and the right side of the drive you see two long black plastic "things". You normally should be able to move them up and down a little bit, but in most cases with broken drives, you will see that you can't move the right black thing. This is the reason: If you look at the big metal "border" which holds all the laser stuff and the lens etc, you see that there are 4 "screws" which hold the thing - two on the lower side where the disc slot is and two at the upper side. When you exactly look at the upper right side of this metal thing (its the upper left side on the picture), you will see that it is not in the right position. You have to put your finger on the upper right screw and push it down ("down" in this case really means "down" and not in direction to the disc slot!) you have to be careful but you have to use pressure, too. Then you should hear a sound like "CLICK" and it should lock in his right position. Now you should be able to move the right black plastic thing up and down a little bit! After that you can put all the things together again Edited March 9, 2008 by $n!pR

KC
Yeah - Im surprised topic-creator hasnt tried it yet :p hell I am even thinking about it. Except I think the serial number is printed on the outside of the box, and on the console.
CloudEngineer
your warranty is over, how about you bite the moral bullet and buy a new one. It is an electronic device that can fail, you knew that when you brought it!
anthony
Had the same problem, I can tell you it's 149.99 to fix it. Mine was personally in warantee (although they gave me a run around at first because I didn't have my receipt) so I didn't have to pay. The problem is the Blu-ray laser has been unseated, and no disc of any type will be read. Don't ask me how it happens but it affects about 1% of all PS3s. I had mine replaced in February (I bought it in December), should only take about 3 weeks.
anthony
Just another thing, if you still have your receipt, get on the horn and be persistent. Tell them its been only 3 months over the date of purchase, say your a loyal customer, and the entire situation is disheartening. It took me 4hours on the phone to get them to waive my proof of purchase and get my system fixed. If your persistent, friendly and act disappointed you might be able to get somewhere. If not, bite the bullet and get the console fixed through Sony. You're getting a whole new Blu-ray drive for 150 dollars, and it will come back with another free 90-120 day warantee
DPyro
I would still try the fix on the second page if you can't get them to fix it for free.
Andrew Lyle Global Moderator Posted March 11, 2008 Global Moderator Share Posted March 11, 2008 Wow, a hundred and fifty dollars to fix the drive! That seems a little too unreasonable to just swap the blu-ray drive. I wonder how cheap they get them, to how much they charge to replace it. MightyJordan
i got an extended warranty with mine...i smashed a controller in a fit of rage the other night, its now winging its way off to be replaced ?35 well spent:)) I've done similar things with my past controllers when I was a kid. I smashed a couple of Xbox controllers the same way you did. I also wrecked a couple of PS1 controllers before, but the thing was when I got into a fit of rage, I chewed on the analog sticks.: I threw them on the floor as well.:DD Back to OP, that's unlucky, mate. I feel for you. I've had problems before, but it was all 360. I've had to call up Microsoft Support no less than three times. The 360 was the first console to ever break down on me. My old PS1 was more reliable, and it dropped on the floor a few times. I have a friend who's been gaming since the ZX81, and the 360 was the first console to ever go down on him!:

They essentially just swap your PS3 with a new or refurbished one.
Dirk
your warranty is over, how about you bite the moral bullet and buy a new one. It is an electronic device that can fail, you knew that when you brought it! Yea I know **** can break thanks man. Also I did go ahead and pay the hundred and fifty dollars. My box should be here tomorrow and then I send it back the following day. Apparently they are just going to swap the console for a new one like Sniper said.
