Status of Shift........

Recommended Posts

Ok, guys.

I just talked with CrimsonRedMk and it seems that he is taking on working on Shift Gnome. I also have not hear anything on the development of Shift KDE at all, or any of the other apps that we have discussed over our past several IRC meetings. As a result of inactivity, I am dropping Ganesh off of the team. I'm sorry to do that, but he has had no posts and no participation in our group at all.

I also realize that some of you guys are on vacation, or are taking trips, so that is fine. But it seems that Shift development is taking a break. While development is a community effort, we need to keep moving forward. I will try to get with all of our staff to make sure I know what we are all doing.

I appreciate everyone's efforts and hope that this is just a temporary lull.

Barney

It's insanely hard to work on 3 versions, I've focused on Lite because I thought Ganesh was going to take KDE, Simon will be gone until the end of March, so I'm back to working on all 3. Yay. :(

Even I'm not almost fine I wait Eggsalad's voice for improving/working on any theme/icon package (also from my point design does not acquire weeks ; I overdo hours ! ) .

That's all I can say at this moment .

I'm the new boy on the project, and as such I realise that my thoughts won't carry as much weight, but it seems clear to me that if resources are being stretched, maybe we should consider re-thinking how Shift is being released.

We currently have three editions. Ideally, we'd have three dev teams working on them, with Crimson and Barney at the "top" pulling it all together. That isn't happening, for whatever reason. Would it not be more productive to concentrate everone's effort on one "flavour" of Shift, and then once we're established, and we're happy with where Shift is, apply what we've done to the other two editions?

That is, if we feel we need two more versions... Maybe Shift would be a better distro if it only offered one DE by default?

... Just my thoughts on this... I know how easy it is to loose sight of the objectives of any project, and that sometimes you need to take a step back and evaluate where you are at, and where you are going, to enable you to move forward. Perhaps now is that time?

I quess working for three editions simultaneously require a larger team (don't include designers cause there's the easy part) , whatever ...

I think/hope this is a temporary lull, Barney. I know I keep thinking about things that want doing that I can do or help with. It's just as far as that meeting went, yesterday was my birthday and I was out with friends so couldn't be at the meeting. I'll definitely 'shift my arse into gear' when I get back to America tomorrow. No more excuses!! :D

It seemed that Mike got caught last time round doing a lot of the dev work. That's not a good situation really. Even though he is well capable of pulling it off, it's just not fair really.

I hope you know better than to think Shift goes behind anything besides real life to me, Barney, and even then it takes priority quite often. My absence as of late can be explained quite simply: school is hell. I didn't put any effort into school last term, and paid for it in a big way, and so this term I changed it around. Unfortunately, that was at the sacrifice of Shift.

I will be in Europe until (given that my flights leave here on Wednesday and return on time) March 29, and once I'm back, I do intend on helping with Shift again. Gnome is still my child ;)

But it occurred to me the other night that, according to discussions we've had in the past (amongst us developers), we would merge everything into one DVD version near the time we are preparing Shift One. But we currently have 3 completely different distributions under our name, and we need to face that fact, and along with that fact, we need to understand that it simply isn't working. With SVN set up now, it is completely feasible to have one DVD version with each WM/DM integrated, as every time someone wants to change something, it no longer involves uploading and downloading an entire ISO, just the file(s) one wants to change.

So I think it's time we focused our efforts on that, and if need be, instead of merging each distribution of Shift later, separate them into CD's should there be enough demand.

Yes I know, Simon ;) . I knew you were out. And we will take your ideas (with everyone else's) seriously. These we will discuss at our next dev meeting for sure.

Well, I am still wanting to help with the flux end of Lite. However, while I have the .iso from CrimsonRedMk, I am really quite lost at doing development or changes through "uck" (I did install the .deb and even tried firing it up once, but it gave me some error I do not recall when I ran it). Everything seems to be in a compressed filesystem within the iso.

I'll get CrimsonRedMk on it the next time I talk to him, Mark. Thanks!

Unable to create /home/mark/tmp/customization-scripts directory

Let me get each of the steps and options I selected and post them...

  • language packs to install: en
  • language at boot of live CD: en
  • choose desktop environment which will be present: others
  • please choose iso image which will be used as base for customized LiveCD: shiftlite0.6.3.iso
  • enter name for CD: (left it at default "Customized Ubuntu live CD" )
  • do you want to customize CD manually during build: no
  • do you want to delete all win32 related files from CD: no

then it puts up a box that says

All necessary information has been gathered.

Building will start now.

Note: You will have to provide your password to gain administrative privileges using sudo (necessary to mount ISO files).

Your live CD will be created as

/home/mark/tmp/remaster-new-files/livecd.iso

Please fasten your seatbelts and enjoy the ride.

and that's when the error happens.

EDIT: I rm -rf'd the directory and it went further, but still failed with a Build Failure

Building failed.

Please examine file build.log which has been created in directory where you run the script.

If you still cannot find the problem, please send post a support request at:

^ I dunno. The ISO had to have mounted because the command UCK runs is cp *...so it knows the files are there, it just will not copy them. Do you have disk space...I'm pretty sure you have enough...so I don't know why this is happening :/

plenty of free space

mark@mark-core2:~$ df -h /dev/sda2
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda2 220G 66G 144G 32% /home
mark@mark-core2:~$

It is a mystery to me. :(

I'm doing my best to keep up with things, but university isn't really forgiving. Fortunately, summer starts in mid april for me, so I'll have much more time then.
