Nashy
I just bought an Asus eeePC because all I need it for is a quick browse in bed before I go to sleep. One thing I was hoping / wondering. Am I able to just have a desktop and everything like a normal OS. It runs Xandros (I think that's the name), but has its own shell menu thingy. I hate it. Also, Skype, it has a built in web cam, I have nowhere I can check to see if it's installed / running or anything? How do I use it!

Elliot B.
Thanks!Althought, those options arn't available in Skype on it? That is based on the Windows version. I am aware than the Linux variant(s) may differ.
Nashy
Thanks heaps. Can would you be able to point me in the direction of a smaller good linux dist? This one's good, but it's a bit big and leaves me little of the already small availble space.
markwolfe Veteran Posted March 18, 2008 Veteran Share Posted March 18, 2008 Quite honestly, you might be better off trying some of these questions at the Eee user forums: http://forum.eeeuser.com/ There may be several Eee users on Neowin, but there are a lot more at their official forum. Dessimat0r
You can put Windows XP on it :) You might like that better.

Shibby
I've got an eeePC. I'm loving it and making me love linux even more. I've used linux a few times before, but this just cements my liking. http://wiki.eeeuser.com/howto:getkde#enabl..._-_the_easy_way Thats what I used anyway for a full desktop. You will find the task bar rather nasty in the full desktop and may wish to look at doing some sort of themes. I tend to just use the terminal (ctrl alt t) and issue commands to load up programs. As for the webcam you can check the bios if it's enabled or disabled, the easy desktop mode has a program to view the camera and to record etc etc. At the moment I'm looking at replacing the ram to 2gig and getting some SD cards for different linux distros. Mainly ubuntu and eeexbuntu perhaps backtrack as well.
Nashy
I was looking at putting eeexbuntu or Ubuntu. Do you think they work out of the box?
Si Veteran Posted March 20, 2008 Veteran Share Posted March 20, 2008 eeexubuntu does, it's been specially customised for the eee. As I understand it, the 8.04 release of Ubuntu will also work out of the box (it goes into beta tomorrow according to this http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=20227).
