Shift Linux Summit

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, me again. I'd like to introduce something new. It's a Shift Week! (Shift One Week)

What?

6 days of intense development, idea gathering, graphics, sounds, and everything needed for a Neowin Linux operating system.

When?

The week of March 24-March 29. Monday-Friday at 10AM EDT (UTC -4) to 12PM EDT. Saturday as noted below.

Monday - Where we are, Todo list, Ideas, Roles.

Tuesday - News since yesterday, Thoughts, Q&A, Progress Report.

Wednesday - Final 0.7 Changelog, Bugs.

Thursday - Last-Minute Requests, Final Code/Graphics Freeze.

Friday - 0.7 is built, packaged, and uploaded.

Saturday - 0.7 Public Release. Remember, all will be credited!

Why?

One is coming. Join together and don't make this "another" distro. Ideas and potential are here. And, if you help out, you'll be credited (and may even get a spot on the Team)!

Who?

Every Neowin member.

Where?

Neowin IRC, #shiftlinux, This forum, and ShiftLinux.net.

Any takers? I'd like to know if anyone's coming. I like to get my hopes up :)

Hey, just to keep my Flux decoration skills up, I did a quick slice of one of MrEggsalad's "snazzy" teasers and started to put them into a fluxbox theme. A few buttons missing that we ought to draw up, even if we aren't using them by default (but some user might want) is the "shade" and "stick" icons. I usually like a hollow/filled circle for stuck/unstuck - simple and elegant. And a "minimize" type bar, but at the top with an arrow or caret (^) touching up to it for shade. Most Windows users aren't familiar with these two, but I love shade (I don't button it, and prefer double-click to shade), but I use stick in the left end of the window title bar. Here is a screenshot sample of flux using MrEggsalad's sample:

Oh, it would make things 10x easier if I could get .pngs, .xbms, .xcfs or whatever of theme work, so I can take these images and use them, rather than using GIMPs crop tool and trying to measure the same for focused and unfocused windows to match widget placement.

Also, I think that he was concepting colorized buttons when moused-over (or pressed). Flux doesn't have mouseover on window buttons, but I can make them change when pressed. Flux doesn't have transparency in decorations, either, as far as I know... Right now this initial glossing of the theme does not include "pressed" images, and pressing a button makes the decoration look as ugly there as it does for where my missing stick button would be on the left side.

As far as the time goes, 10am is work time for me, so I will just stay up to date on what is posted in the forums (IRC logs, or other members posting here). (Y)

Great idea, Crimson. I'll PM all of the team also. Let's all get in there and make this week a great one!
