[DGS]
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/03/20/...bd-live-to-ps3/ Here’s a quick preview of the next PLAYSTATION 3 system software update coming up in the next few days. Firmware v2.20, introduces a number of features to further enhance your PLAYSTATION 3 as the hub of your entertainment center. Most notably, the update enables the PS3 to support Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0, also known as BD-Live. You can connect now to the Internet while playing discs that support BD-Live to obtain additional content and special features. These features vary from disc to disc, and will keep your BD discs fresh with new content and in some cases exclusive content only accessible to owners of BD-Live enabled discs. On April 8th Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release The 6th Day and Walk Hard on Blu-ray; these titles will be among the first to take advantage of BD-Live. With this update, the PLAYSTATION 3 becomes the first Blu-ray player on the market with BD-Live functionality. Here are some of the other new features/enhancements that will be included in Firmware v2.20: * The ability to copy PS3 Music and Photo playlists to a PSP system. We introduced the ability to create Music and Photo playlists on the PS3 in firmware update v2.0. Now you can easily export your playlists to your PSP. * You can now play DivX and WMV format files that are over 2 GB. * Resume Play - begin playing a DVD or BD disc from the point where you previously stopped it, even if you eject the disc and insert a different movie or game. * Use your PSP as a remote control to play back your music files on your PS3 without turning on your TV. * The Internet browser now displays some web pages faster. In addition [save Target] has been added as an option under file. This option lets you save a file that is linked to a web page to your PS3 hard drive or storage media. There are a few other tweaks and upgrades included in v2.20 - we’ll provide more specifics as the update is about to go live. :woot:
Argi
Hey that PSP remote is a pretty cool idea, although I rarely play music through my TV.
crazzyyfool
Does this update make the PS3 the first official Blu-ray player with Profile 2.0 support?
skywalker
Nice, the "resume play" is a feature I'm badly missing.
morficus
hhm... I don't understand the "You can now play DivX and WMV formats over 2GB". Isn't that something we can do now? (I don't have any 2gb divix or wmv, so I can't really try). I know the 4GB limitation was 'cause the PS3 only supports FAT32 FS on external drives.... never knew of the 2gb limitation... Does this update make the PS3 the first official Blu-ray player with Profile 2.0 support? Yup, sure seems like it With this update, the PLAYSTATION 3 becomes the first Blu-ray player on the market with BD-Live functionality.

Isn't that something we can do now? (I don't have any 2gb divix or wmv, so I can't really try).I know the 4GB limitation was 'cause the PS3 only supports FAT32 FS on external drives.... never knew of the 2gb limitation... There was a 2GB playback limit on a WMV/Divx file. Just like there is a 4GB playback limit on an MP4 file. Any other media file can be any size, the only restriction for all media is that the PS3 doesn't recognize NTFS drives therefore external drives can only be FAT32. In being FAT32 4gb+ files don't fit on them, so any other media over 4GB, that isn't an AVI/WMV/MP4 file has to either be streamed, burned to a DVD/DL DVD, or copied over a fileserver. The only work around for AVI/WMV previously was to chop up the file into segments. Say you had a 4GB AVI file, you'd get a program to split it into 2GB chunks. Nice change and it doesn't hurt, but not really that beneficial - Hardly any AVI files will be anywhere near 2GB :p WMV is also not used that often, and for HD content, H264/MKV should be used, not WMV. Piggy
I'd love to see straight mkv playback on the ps3, then I'd be set.
+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted March 20, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted March 20, 2008 I'd love to see straight mkv playback on the ps3, then I'd be set. I think the BDA would be on Sony like a ton of bricks. MKV really isn't used for anything bar people ripping movies/supplying pirated copies. It makes no sense at all for Sony to support the MKV container - Nothing they sell/allow you to download needs to use that container. They use MP4 for their HD trailers just now. While it would be nice, at the moment there is easy enough ways to get MKVs to playback on your PS3 :p We can hope one day though, maybe EVERY MKV 720p/1080p can be remuxed (some have issues), or else a piece of homebrew software allows MKV playback on your PS3. +Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted March 20, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted March 20, 2008 (edited) While this is nice,I am still disappointed for Sony not releasing in game XMB feature in this firmware Yeah that's a bit of a (N) it's taking so long. Two things I think, It will be out in time for the BIG sellers - Maybe GTA4, most likely for MGS4. It may be "done", but for whatever reason Sony are really waiting to do a complete "blow out". What I mean by that, is an unveiling of in-game XMB/messaging, Home and their new online store all at once. It may make business sense to offload all three of them at once, for a "WOW" factor, but we've seen in the consumers eyes, we just really want things ASAP :p Tbh, I would love that though. If firmware 3.0 or something, gave me Home, In-game XMB and a new store all at once - I now wait on game news websites RUMOURING all the above with firmware 3.0 now... :| :/ Much like 2.0 was suppose to do everything  It would just feel like the most "complete" update ever, rather than getting these things one by one. I mean, lets face it, in-game XMB is going to be pretty much tied into Home in some respects. It's quite likely you'll be able to access Home from the in-game XMB while playing a game. I think Sony believe we can "wait" for in-game XMB to get the whole package like I spoke about above, all at once. In all honesty we really can wait, as we aren't paying anything, and can still enjoy our PS3 games online/with friends - It is frustrating to wait though, but I think those who get peeved off and threaten to sell their PS3/quit supporting Sony due to the waiting, will most likely be "won over" once the update arrives ;) Edited March 20, 2008 by Audioboxer
WelshBluebird
Well done sony. Again competition = good. The only thing stopping me getting one now is the price. If sony can push it down the ?200 (maybe even introduce a low end SKU for that price) then I'll be picking one up. Perhaps at the end of the year? sn00pie
I'm pretty sure Sony already have the resume playback for DVD movies, but I think if you take out the disc it no longer applies... Are there any profile 2.0 movies out right now? If so, which ones are they?
Ricardo Gil
I'm pretty sure Sony already have the resume playback for DVD movies, but I think if you take out the disc it no longer applies... That would be a pretty dumb resume function, don't you think? Well, I thought it had resume also, but just yesterday I found out that's not the case. My 360 died 2 weeks ago, so now I have to watch DVD's on the PS.

williamhook
I'm pretty sure Sony already have the resume playback for DVD movies, but I think if you take out the disc it no longer applies...Correct. :)Resume play is awesome, my old Sony DVD player used to do it for up to 7 discs, never had a player that does it since (I think the 360 did it though, but I sold mine so I can't check :p ). It's a really handy feature imo.
