Is Shift for me?

Recommended Posts

I've been a Windows user since i began using computers some 15 years ago. I've tried Linux here and there in various forms but could never get used to it. But i'm growing tired of the increasing specs just to run an OS like Vista, and while i like how Vista looks and feels, there's no reason i should have to have at least 1 GB to run it smoothly.

Now, i've tried Ubuntu 7.04, but it didn't support 1280x800 out of the box so i didn't take the time to figure out how to fix that. I tried OpenSUSE 10.3 and while i liked the new look of Gnome, i still wasn't happy with the switch from Vista to SUSE. I've tried Kubuntu as well and again...just couldn't stick with it.

So what exactly about Shift should make me want to use this? I'm interested in it, especially knowing that the community is involved, but i hear things like xcfx 3 or something is new and looks great compared to Gnome and KDE and this is all way over my head. I want something that looks good, supports 1280x800, and doesn't suck up the resources.

Would anyone recommend Mandriva 2008 since i'm still hoping to do a *little* gaming and i could use Cedega...so suggestions are welcomed.

Shift Linux 0.6 is based on *buntu but the others will tell much more about it because I'm new and have been using Shift Linux since yesterday. You can try Ubuntu/Xubuntu(Ubuntu with XFCE) 7.10, it has an app that configures X for you so you shouldn't have much trouble though i recommend to learn how to configure X manually through xorg.conf.

I tried Mandriva when it was called Mandrake so I don't know much about the new versions.

We believe that Shift is a great distro. I suggest that you burn the .iso and try it as a Live CD. Then, if all works well on your machine, you can install it and try it out. One of the beauties of this distro is that the creators of it are right here, and can help you if you need it.

@admodieus just download the live cd and use qemu to try the system

@elessar I don't think there are many differences because only the recent version is based on Ubuntu so they are quite the same except for the theme and some apps. Also if you need help with configuring X I can help just install Shift and post the contents of your xorg.conf or pm me.

I would say try it out. You cannot go wrong at all. I have tried it and I can tell you that it is very good. Plus if you need anything, you can always post here and the developers will be able to help you :)
