Blackout while updating PS3 firmware

Recommended Posts

Just literally got my PS3 today.... Found the 80gb model and jumped on it.

I came back to my house and turned it on, configured the network and such, and discovered that there was a new firmware that needed to be upgraded.

It started downloading the firmware... Success. Now it started installing it. About 30% through, I lost power in my house.

An hour later, when the power came on, I went to turn on my PS3 but got nothing. Nothing was displaying on the screen.

I wanted to see if any of the circuits were fried so I went online and learned how to dismantle it. I successfully took it apart.

I noticed no fried components, but my playstation 3 still wont work.

I bought this thing off ebay for about $600, and I don't feel like dealing with a broken system. Whats my next step, how do I upgrade the firmware again? How do I get it fixed? As I said, I just bought it, so I assume it wont be that big of a deal.

Might be bricked :/

You really shouldn't of opened it yourself, I don't know if that voids warranty.

All consoles have a 1 year warranty, you might just need to get it replaced.

Does the PS3 power up?

If so, it might just be the video settings acting up. Push and HOLD the power button till you hear it beep (usually bout 5 seconds).

You opened it? That was a big mistake... you aren't covered by the warranty anymore :/ I'm not sure how to manually flash the firmware, but I'm pretty sure its not going to be very easy...

Why would you open it? Do you have any experience fixing a fried circuit ( If that was the case ) on a PS3?

...

No, but I thought it would help sony when I called them....

I just got off the phone with them, and they want nothing to do with it....

I'm gonna put it back together and drag it from my car... Maybe i'll make a video

I see no purpose of opening it because you never turn off(same goes for a black out) a eletronic if your updating the firmware, if that happens the eletronic firmware will be corrupted and will NOT boot up.

So you told them you opened it? How would opening it up yourself even remotely help them?

Did you try to do what I said?

I think the Sony repair center has qualified people to tell what's wrong with it.

Enjoy your homemade paperweight - Never open your own hardware if you have no idea how to fix it.

I did, but no go... The system wont respond

Try removing your hard drive and powering up the PS3.

(removing the hard drive doesn't void warranty, but not like it matters now)

The only thing your allowed to remove and change is the HDD, it's in the manual and they encourage you to upgrade your HDD if you wish.

That doesn't void your warranty but anything else does. Your HDD might be loose, make sure it's connected correctly, if not too bad so sad.

Thank you Capt. Obvious.

We know, he opened his PS3, voided the warranty, so the Sony Repair Center can't help him.

Oh well, lesson learned - Dont void your warranty then expect help.

I can't believe you told Sony you opened it as well, that was just plain silly.

Try giving Sony another call, hope you get another phone operator, then say you haven't opened it.

Worth a shot.

Nah, they probably would have logged it when he did his first call.

You may be able in future to somehow reflash the chip, ala the PSP battery mod thing so keep it around somewhere. You may already be able to find someone who can flash the ship somehow.

He probably does not care firing up $600 into the toilet, wondering if he is one of these guys that the parents buy anything they want, if they buy to him an iphone and he broke it, they will buy again another one, lol!

If you just got it today, why didn't you just take it back to the store where you bought it and either exchange it for a new one or get a refund? You probably can't do that anymore considering you opened the casing. :punch:
