Blackout while updating PS3 firmware

Recommended Posts

If you just got it today, why didn't you just take it back to the store where you bought it and either exchange it for a new one or get a refund?
I bought this thing off ebay for about $600

What is this, 2006?

Why buy a PS3 off eBay?

Yea indeed, don't understand this either.

Neither do i understand opening it before trying to remove the HD.

Neither do I understand calling Sony and telling them that he's opened it.

Very strange story!

Ummm....

The warranty may be void, but the Service Center may still be able to fix it. Of course they will charge you money but it's possible that it won't cost much money if its just a messed up bios. It might be worth checking into that.

Guys why are you worry about this guy PS3? If he already did what he said and he told Sony that he opened it, there is nothing else to add, he just don't care and I don't understand why he need to open a thread in which is looking for help but he does not sound like he need it.

that was hard to read. more difficult than viewing the entire thread. do you ever read your own posts to see if it makes any sense?

it's fun to post and laugh at how silly (stupid) other people can be, thats why you posted the above in this thread and why i posted this reply as well.

a sony repair center can and will fix the console at the OP's expense, no matter how silly the dismantling was.

I'd be trying this to be honest

OK, opening the console was just DUMB I mean really DUMB move, but other than that... Let me ask the REAL question.

If power goes out (Considering that a person did not be this stupid), while console is updating firmware, can anything be done Or SOL?

How much usually?

Try this:

1. Power Off the PS3 via the power switch in back and power back on w/switch.

2. Hold Power Button on the Front until you hear 3 beeps.

3. Then go through the initial setup and then run a full Format via System > Format. (will take approx 3 1/1 hours). You may need to have our AV cables ready if your using HDMI (in case HDMI isn't detected after initial reset).

That can Fix the corrupt firmware?

I wouldn't of thought so myself, because how could it even boot if the firmware is corrupt?? unless it has some form of read-only backup BIOS or something in it to recover from this sorta thing? (like a computer does). Still I'd be interested to know if that trick worked, might be useful to know (I hope to never need to use it though)

All solutions about formatting the HDD or checking the cable to see if it's ok, don't matter. PS3 operating system isn't loaded on the HDD, it's loaded on a chip, that's why it's called firmware.

Also, I would bet that there is a 2nd BIOS chip in there, just for the case of corrupt firmware. Just like all the motherboards that have Dual Bios. When the firmware is corrupt due to power loss, you just press a button, the initial firmware is copied from the chip that is never erased or replaced and holds the original firmware, to the chip that holds the bootup Bios, and then you have a working motherboard again.

Not sure what to suggest since you went and opened it but I just don't know what to believe, your attitude to this is disturbing :s Format won't fix the FW as its not on the HDD. I doubt the PS3 has 2 Bios chips either. Only way is to get Sony to fix but pay for the damage since you broke the warranty.

I actually bought another PS3, but ran into a completely different issue. My sound pops when I play the games. It seems I can never win when it comes to home entertainment.

To the OP: I seriously cannot believe you can be that moronic! How could you open up the Playstation 3 and somehow see if you can fix it?? Even if you found a fried component, how the hell would opening it up help?? You got exactly what you deserved. You deserve to have Sony slam the phone down when you tell them you opened it up and still expect them to help you....nobody can be that thick-headed!
