Coded Matrix
What are some things I need to look out for when switching to Linux. Also, what should I expect to be different? (I'm switching form Windows). Also, can I use these programs on Linux: Opera and Photoshop P.S. I'm looking into Ubuntu most likely.
markwolfe Veteran Posted March 22, 2008 Veteran Share Posted March 22, 2008 Opera, yes. Their website will give you a nice big "install" button. Photoshop, no. Some older versions of Photoshop may work under wine, but this is probably something you won't want to rely on. GIMP can work well with Photoshop .psd files and do much of the same things, but if you rely at all on CYMK colorspace for delivering to a real print shop, then GIMP will fall on its face (no CYMK). Coded Matrix
Ok. Thanks :) I'll have to consider it then, because I'm really getting into photoshopping..
kyro
For gimp and doing CMYK work, use gimp-cmyk plugin works nicely. http://rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.php?query=gimp-cmyk http://www.blackfiveservices.co.uk/separate.shtml
la3r
First I will advise you to try GIMP. But yes Photoshop up to version CS2 works really good in the newest wine versions. And yes opera is natively available on linux. (I don't know how much you have looked into linux, but just remember it is NOT windows neither is it a replacement.) Good luck in the world of open source.
