Berserk87
how does ubuntu or any other distro update? is it the same way as windows does? like installing vista after xp. or if i installed the ubuntu 8 beta right now, when it becomes final, will it just download/update itself? Fish
All software and OS updates are handled by the Update Manager. By default, it runs once per day and checks for any and all updates and notifies you about them. In essence, it's very much like Windows, but adds software updates too if you used the repos to install them. You can install Hardy Heron now (either by downloading a cd or using a terminal) , and you will be using the latest beta. You will continue to receive updates until release day and beyond. Just be aware that although it's nearly finished, it is beta, and you may run into problems.
ichi
It should update to final, same as you could upgrade to hardy if you had gutsy installed.
Berserk87
cool. so its more like how in windows we get piece by piece updates until a service pack, which is a compilation of all those pieces. but with a linux distro, its piece by piece of a beta until final? markwolfe Veteran Posted March 24, 2008 Veteran Share Posted March 24, 2008 Linux is more like constantly evolving. If you use bleeding edge repos, or compile from source or such, it is like living in beta (something that I wouldn't do, but to each their own). I use the normal repos. Every few days there is something that is getting an update, from major apps to smaller libraries and such. Updating is quite painless (though about two years ago Ubuntu had a problem with their updates for about 12 hours - if you updated during that time, the update caused a problem with your GUI config and you could only boot to a command prompt unless you fixed it yourself or updated again after they fixed their problem with a bad file on the repo servers). There isn't a "Linux release schedule", like there is with OSX or Windows. Ubuntu tries to create a new release every 6 months or so, but that is really just a snapshot of everything going on at that time.

Fish
You will be notified that 8.04 has been released, and asked if you want to update your system.
