Another Linux on PS3 Thread

Recommended Posts

I have never used Linux and want to try it out for the first time on my PS3. Yellow Dog seems to be the customized for it and I'm wondering if there is any other distros that are easy to install as that particular one?

Are there any advantages of said distro over others when used on the PS3?

Also, does it still upscale XviD/DivX in Linux?

The best one is meant to be Ubuntu, even though YDL is the 'official' version. Though I have never tried linux on the PS3, all because of my NFS:Pro Street saves lol.

Why can't you try linux because of your saves? :s

NFS:Pro Street saves are locked. So you cant copy them :(, and I didn't want to lose them.

Your better off going with Yellow Dog. It has the best support for the Cell chip. Ive always prefered openSUSE 10.x but I wont try it on the PS3.

Even with it being the official distro for PS3 it's still lacking. Granted it's my first time using Linux, but it has been a headache and then some. Getting it to fit full screen 1080p on my tv was not as easy as I would have expected and I got the wireless to work once and then it hasn't worked since. Now I am trying to get VLC to install and found that it will also be a pain in the ass.

I'm assuming Linux is much easier to use on the PC over the PS3. If not, you nix users have my ultimate respect because so far it's like pulling teeth while getting kicked in the nuts.
