What is the best version of Linux?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. Just wanna ask you all a straight forward question. What is/was the best version of Linux you used before? Its much better if you can give more supportive reasons. Thanks a lot. :)

Short answer: The best version is the one that works best for that individual.

There is no "one" individual, so there is no "one" Linux.

There is one Linux foundation. The kernel. But even that can be customized and tweaked by the user to be exactly the way they want it. Then add in the packages on top of that. And if you want an optional GUI (X Window) and your choice of Window Manager and Desktop Environment...

And you can see that your question may seem easy enough to answer on the surface, but it is like asking what is the best type of cookie. There are different main types (sugar, chocolate chip, peanut butter, oatmeal, etc), and each one can have a different recipe variation to best suit the person making and presumably eating them. :)

Absolutely class post. I would also add, that if you have enough free time, to try out the more advanced distros that require more manual configuration. You tend to learn a lot more about the inner workings of Linux that way over some of the more "automagic" distros.

So many different versions out there really it depends on what you want from Linux.

Ubuntu is the most popular choice as of right now. I've only mostly used Fedora and Ubuntu and I enjoyed them both. I'd like to try more distributions of Linux but I just haven't had the time to fool around with others.

I thought Linux was going to be VERY hard to learn and use.. but Ubuntu 7.10 changed my mind about that. It's easy to use, PLUS you have a huge "community" to help with your problems.

As above, it depends on what you want to use it for and on individual preference. Some are free some are not, if you can be bothered to pay there is RedHat, If you want a huge community there is Ubuntu.
