RAID 0
I built a new computer a few weeks ago and installed XP with no problems. It's running great as far as Windows goes. I created three partitions; one for XP, one for Ubuntu and one for the swap file. I have a RAID 0 setup but Ubuntu only sees two separate drives, not the RAID. How do I go about "slip-streaming" the RAID drivers into the Ubuntu install or getting Ubuntu to see my RAID and it's two partitions? My Specs: MSI P35 Platinum Combo E6300 @2.8, 400 MHz FSB MSI 8600 GT 512 DDR3 2 GB OCZ DDR2-800 Gold series 2x 160 GB Western Digital SATA drives DVD reader 450 watt PS Thanks for the help everyone! I'm eager to get 7.10 on this hot rod! EDIT: I've tried both alt install and the live CD. Same result.
omganinja
I dont use linux much so this probably wont work, but couldnt you boot off the live cd, install the raid drivers then install?
jamend
Ubuntu doesn't have RAID support by default so you need to install it: http://help.ubuntu.com/community/FakeRaidHowto. You can skip the introduction... Edit: fixed the link... not sure why Neowin doesn't like https. Edited March 26, 2008 by Cephas

I'll try it now. I don't know what I'm doing.. but I'll give it a shot. Ubuntu doesn't have RAID support by default so you need to install it: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FakeRaidHowto. markwolfe Veteran Posted March 26, 2008 Veteran Share Posted March 26, 2008 /me looks at subtitle... "Help me Obi WanMarkJenson" Sorry, but I have only experimented with RAID once using the dmraid tools. But, being a Linux-only kind of guy, I have never seen a Windows "fakeRAID" setup. :(
The Right Guy
I already tried to install Ubuntu on my RAID 0 config even with this guide but it didn't work I asked why on the Ubuntu irc and someone linked me on a launchpad article (that i cant remember the link) and it said that the ''dmraid'' package wasn't mature enough to be integrated in the installer
markwolfe Veteran Posted March 26, 2008 Veteran Share Posted March 26, 2008 Frankly, you might be better off with some old 40GB hard drive lying around to install onto. Unless you can use some Windows tools to shrink your existing RAIDed partitions.
RAID 0
Frankly, you might be better off with some old 40GB hard drive lying around to install onto.Unless you can use some Windows tools to shrink your existing RAIDed partitions. That's the thing. I already have 25 gigs set aside for the install and 2 gigs for the swap file. Adding another hdd might be the only way to go about this? Ehhh. I'm already pushing my cheap-o PS to the limit. Last night, it took two boots to get the live CD to work... then when it does, the "taskbar" at the top goes away and only leaves me install options. I really REALLY would love to get Ubuntu on this PC. Anyone have any ideas?
GatorV
Did you look at this guide: http://wiki.eyermonkey.com/My_Ubuntu_(7.10)_Installation It looks more simple than the one from the wiki..
markwolfe Veteran Posted March 26, 2008 Veteran Share Posted March 26, 2008 Well, if you set up your Linux "partitions" already within your RAID array, that adds the complexity/incompatibility that I think you are seeing now. That's why I was thinking that you might need to find some way to have partitions outside of your array to install Linux onto. As far as the LiveCD not working right, I would lean toward the usual suspects of burn/read issues, or other hardware issue preventing boot. Maybe memory? I'm not getting any specific item that pops into mind for causing this flaky CD-boot issue. Alternatively, if you have an image of your XP install (or don't mind wiping and re-doing it in the near future), just throw Ubuntu on there, letting it take over the drives, and verify it installs properly. Once you are sure Ubuntu works on it, then re-set up by making Ubuntu space first, then giving the rest to XP.
RAID 0
I wouldn't mind having to do a reinstall to get Linux running. Although, I did just transfer all my data to this PC and would be a pain to copy everything back. From my understanding of dual booting XP with Ubuntu, you have to install XP first then GRUB takes over from there allowing you to choose at boot up. I'm going to try the guide GatorV posted (thanks BTW) and I'll be back to give a SitRep.
GatorV
Good luck, I hope you can get it to dual boot :)
Drakesh
Good luck, I've been trying to get Ubuntu running on a Intel Matrix Raid for about a year now, with absolutely no success, using both of the guides posted in this thread.
