PS3 Buyer's Guide Help

Recommended Posts

I am definitely in the market for a new next-gen console, and I think that the PS3 suits me over the Wii. I have spec'd out 3 different retailers for the price of a PS3, and most of them end up around $700 for the 40GB.

All bundles include the following:

? Hardware

o Game system

o Sixaxis wireless controller

o Sixasis wireless controller

o AC power cord

o Audio/Video cable (HDMI or Component cable sold separately)

o Ethernet cable

o USB cable

o Spider-Man 3 on Blu-Ray

o HDMI Cable

o Sony Blu-Ray Remote Control

? Software

o Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction

o Uncharted: Drakes Fortune

I lshooters (Gears of War, Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, The Orange Box [although not really a shooter, eh Portal?], Bioshock), well dmusic games (Rock Band, GHII, GHIII), GTA-esque games (Crackdown, GTA: San Andreas, Vice City, 3). I also like gadventure games (not Tomb Raider, yes to Ratchet and Clank).

As a rule, I do not like RPGs, but I am open to suggestions of RPGs for people new to them. I tried Mass Effect, but if I get lost for over 15 minutes I give up on the game completely. You can guess why I got rid of it.

Another arbitrary limitation I am afraid, is that the titles must be eitPS3 exclusive significantly better on the PS3 versus the XBOX, because anything multi-platform will be purchased for XBOX [why? More friends with XBOX/Live, gamerscore].

I really enjoyed all three (?) earlier PS2 R&C because the bolts made my addictive personality happy.

Games that may be recommended that I already own:

Call of Duty 4

Rock Band

Orange Box

Guitar Hero

[have rented + finished] Burnout Paradise

[have rented + disliked] Oblivion

Sorry for the wall of text.

I may replace Uncharted with Unreal Tournament III, because a buddy of mine told me Uncharted is a weekend adventure, and not worth purchasing.

I will be purchasing Ratchet & Clank, as it was my favorite series on PS2.

Uncharted is amazing, once you beat it you may even play it over again. Unreal Tournament III is only worth getting if you plan to use a keyboard + mouse with it on the PS3. Otherwise you will get owned online

I have heard that you can specify games with or without KB/M, is this not true? Or are the controller gamers still too good to play against? I wouldn't want to play against KB/M gamers.

I'm not bad at FPS in general (CoD4, Halo 3).

i agree with the uncharted part, but not necessarily the UT3 part. i played it with a controller and it felt great...i would even say one of the best implementations of controls on a console. i wasn't that great, but i think was able to hold my own against m/kb players. mouse and keyboard is always the way to go, but the controller controls aren't bad by any means.

Your in Vancouver too? Buy yours from Costco, you can buy a 40gb model, 2 sixaxis controllers, Uncharted for $499 plus tax. If you want Ratchet & Clank, I have a sealed copy that I'm willing to sell to you for $40? :) PM me if your interested.

Buy your HDMI cable off eBay for $13 opposed to paying $50 + at Future Shop.

Man, great minds think alike!

I did a whole damn spreadsheet yesterday on the places to buy the PS3, and Costco was the winner for me as well. (+$8 over Dell, but unbeatable warranty).

I was thinking NCIX (as shown in the spreadsheet), or Monoprice if I feel like waiting two weeks. But NCIX is instant gratification if I go down to the warehouse.

yess you can specify rooms with keyboard and mouse... I personally dont mind... The patch is due today that fixes many bugs including connecting to european servers from a region 1 disc and fixes mic issues.

buy unreal 3. COD 4 too

Uncharted is a GREAAAAAAAAAAAT game but no value since only singleplayer... buy that game if your gf also likes computer games. Girls love watching uncharted.

The dual shock 3 is coming out soon, you might want to consider getting only one sixaxis for now. I've held off on buying another controller for that reason. You sound like a 360 player, you'll miss the rumble, I did. I agree about the kbm comment for ut3, i suck at that game with a controller, it's too fast, but it feels just like PC Unreal with kbm.

I was thinking the same thing, but it's not *that* important to me.

I will definitely buy a Dual-Shock 3 when it is released in North America (or play-asia now, depending on how much I miss rumble). I only need to buy one though, for when I play games by myself. Friends can survive without rumble.

So three games then?

- Ratchet & Clank

- Uncharted

- Unreal III

Sound good?

Those are the titles I got with my PS3 and they are all great games.

UT3 plays well with a pad. And yes, you can specify whether you wish to play against keyboard & mouse players.

Warhawk is a great game. ALthough it's not a FPS, it offers varied gameplay for different people. Rent Heavenly Sword, way to short to be a purchase, but is pretty good while it lasts. Heh, really there's not much to suggest for the PS3 since the only exclusive games worthy of mention are the high-profile games (Uncharted, Ratchet, etc.) that you already know about, and 95% of the multiplatform games are better on the XBOX360 in some form or another. It's sad, but hopefully by this year's end, Sony will have had a nice collection of killer apps.

Buy it from Costco, I did and it was a great decision. :)

Probably gonna pick it up later today. I don't want to stand in line at NCIX to get an HDMI cable though...

Just picked it up (Costco - 40GB PS3 + extra controller + Ratchet & Clank for $499 + NCIX - HDMI cable for $18 + Futureshop - Uncharted for $60) and am definitely enjoying it. I will probably pick up Unreal III tomorrow.
