Alfista
Just bought the orange box... graphics of Half life 2 is very good. Not COD4 but still very very good. however most of the times there is a huge frame rate issue. Do you guys also have it? will there be a patch for this or is it just bad programming? EnzoFX
I still think HL2 looks on par with the avg game these days.
crazzyyfool
I have Orange Box and stopped playing HL2 because of the horrible graphics. I guess the series was a straight port to the consoles. Also, what's with the loading of levels which what seems like every 5 minutes. So infuriating. Grrr. Guess I've been spoiled by playing Uncharted. :p

I did a direct comparison from HL2 on PS3 and HL2 on my 4 year old PC running the game at max detail, 2xaf and no AA and the PC looked better (my TV and monitor are next to each other). Alfista
yeah more you guys are discussing more i undestand it actually... I agree that the game could have done better if it was not a straight port. Matter of fact the only reason i bought it that I had played HL2 only and not the episodes. And wanted to give it a go... But the terrible framerates and loading times are actually quite irritating... I had an experience with XBOX in some games... Never buy a port of a PC game on consoles as well as never buy a port of a console game on PC...
WelshBluebird
This is just a personal thing, but I'd rather the annoying load times than the annoying texture popping that the UE3 has (the way I understand it is that the engine streams the data in to avoid long load times, but this then causes the texture popping that is in many UE3 games). Of course, CoD4 does it really well IMO (gives the mission intro to hide some of the load time).
PL_ Veteran Posted March 27, 2008 Veteran Share Posted March 27, 2008 COD4 is a better game overall in graphics but Half Life 2 is still fun.. I feel like I'm the only person I know IRL that thinks the Orange Box is way better than COD4 :p

Alfista
welll i only play COD4 online and its for me way better than Team Fortress 2... However single player campaing of Half Life 2 and the episodes are way way way better than the 5 hour long COD4 single player mode... So if someone is not into online play i would not recommend COD4 nor Unreal Tournament 3... Maybe rainbow six and definitely Orange box.. I hope the patch fixes the frame rate issues though. acies
I have Orange Box and stopped playing HL2 because of the horrible graphics. :p I wouldn't call HL2 graphics horrible at all. Though I have only played this on 360. yeah more you guys are discussing more i undestand it actually... I agree that the game could have done better if it was not a straight port. DrunkenMaster
Good thing I read this. I've been dying to play Portal, and HL2 ep 2. I'm going to upgrade to a new PC and was about to not buy a good GFX card so I could game on a PS3 only and play HL2 among other games. If everything is choppy on it, and I'm not picky about graphics, I'll buy a better gfx card for the PC.

Other games COD4, Rainbow Six, Unreal Tournament are very very good... I prefer them over PC version since my PC screen is 19 inch but my plasma connected to ps3 is 42 inch... 2 years ago when i bought my 8800 GTX i promised myself never to switch to consoles sinces PC has of course better graphics... However. bad nvidia drivers, still not great vista and BSOD or driver stopped responding problems on some games made me swear to play games on PC for ONLY strategy games such as COmmand and Conquer.. I TRULY recommend PS3 over PC games simply playing on huge screen and HD with surround system beats better graphics on PC. (though there are some PC games that are not available for Ps3 or just available for xbox 360, therefor few months later i will buy more pC games and see if problems are solved.) I believe a Good PC graphic cards and a ps3 is the best combo.. Since only XBOX 360 games come out for PC later so you wouldnt miss alot.. Thats a reason why i chose PS3 over XBOX... Examples are Bioshock, Gears of War, Command and conquer, Halo and etc....

My laptop with a 8600 can run the games on max with no issues at all. Even my old PC (athlon XP 3000+, 7600GT) runs them fine (HL2 on max, the others pretty close to). EnzoFX
True, HL2 scales well. Even the cheapest card can run it on moderate settings. To max it out, doesn't take much.
.KICK
The game was made in 2004 then the PS3 should be able to play it fine however due to EA screwed up port it has many issues.
Alfista
ok guys... after installing the patch 95 percent of the frame rate problems are gone... The game is very good and playable now. If you somehow stopped playing orange box due to framerate issues, be sure to go back to the game. Loading times are just a bit faster too.
