Shift Linux is on hold

Recommended Posts

Hi Group,

I just wanted to post a small explanation as to recent developments regarding Shift Linux.

I have been informed that some of the Shift Staff has decided to move away from Neowin and develop a new version of Linux. That being said, I would personally like to wish them luck and thank all of the staff for the time, effort, and personal commitment that everyone has contributed to the project.

As for the future of Shift, I will place the project on hold until another group of individuals are willing to pick up the project and move forward with it. We have had a great run and I hope this will continue to be a community effort for future members. Remember that the whole focus of this project is to give our community the chance to learn and develop our distro..........

Thanks for the opportunity that all of you have given me to help, assist, and manage the development of Shift. I look forward to working with such a fine group again, at some time in the future.

Barney

I for one am very sorry to hear all this. Many open source projects are notoriously unstable because of conflicts in personalities and a lack of a financial base. Just look at sourceforge.net for examples of projects that looked promising and then at some point just fell apart.

My own view is that I just want to be a part of the whole open source process, and I was very happy being a member of Neowin's Shift Team. I also thought it would be more stable as it had the backing of Neowin, but it seems it has had its ups and downs in the past and now we are in a down.

I for one would like the project to continue, as it seemed to be going so well. We were moving in the right direction for 1.0 and were building up plans for a dramatic release with promotions and all. The artwork was looking good and the ideas for making the distro better than Ubuntu and for building in things that would increase people's involvement with Neowin as well were in the works. I really thought the Shift train could not be stopped.

That is why it is such a surprise to me, all that has happened so quickly. Thanks, Barney, for all you have done with organising things and inspiring me and others to contribute as they can.

I hope that, when the Team are reformed, I can be a part of it again as it was an important connection for me in terms of learning Linux and of Neowin, the coolest website on the planet.

I am still available to work on the Flux part. I can do no more than that, as my time and limited (non-existent) programming talents don't allow much more than that.

If Neowin will still support a version of Shift Linux, we might want to reduce scope until such time as volunteers re-emerge to assist.

In the mean time, I propose we work on just the Lite version, perhaps? Keep baseline progress going for the foundation, and all that.

I am confident the project will restart. Neowin is full of great talent in all aspects, with lots of enthusiasm for Linux. Here's to hoping it gets going again soon !

i think still pop out 1.0 once hardy goes final even if there's little change from 0.6.5 next month then leave an official hiatus in the mean time. at end of day i think we have more designers then programmers with linux experience

That would be great, Mark. I will get with you on this. Also, Neowin has been nothing but 100% supportive of Shift Linux, I see them as continuing as they have.

I have been using linux for a while now and I'd like to think that I was pretty comfortable with linux and all aspects of it. If you need or would like my help in developing this I will gladly devote sometime to helping this project move forward.

Thank you, very much :) . I will post the requirements for development in a separate thread, once I get home from work.

Okay that sounds good to me. I'll keep my eye out for the thread once it's up and running! :)

I wouldn't mind helping but I don't have much experience building an actual distro, I can do some very basic kernel programming and some advanced C/C++.....but I could only work on it for 1-2 hours a night (most likely only Monday to Thursday)

Perhaps it would be of some help for the future of Shift if the main devs, and others closely involved, could document the steps that have been taken to get Shift where it is today? This way, it might be easier for anyone interested to pick it up and carry on, rather than having to virtually start again.

Like this?

That is where the start should begin.
