Against my better judgement, I bought GT5: Prologue....

Recommended Posts

I'm very disappointed with it - it FEELS like a demo and if this is any indication of the GT5 finished product, I will be avoiding it completely.

It doesn't exactly start well, does it? Installation is amazingly long - we're talking 25-30 minutes. Then it's a further 30 minutes for the download update.

After that, you get repeated warnings that the time/date is incorrect but there is no way to amend this in-game - my PS3 time/date are correct. The GT5 time/date is 24hrs behind.

Fine, it's all installed and updated. We get a nice intro. Nothing fantastic but it's passable - it's not like there's a dramatic storyline to outline. Just some nice elevator music and various shots of cars going around corners.

The GUI menu options are clear enough but they are incredibly slow - buying your car is a painful experience between swapping around manufacturers - are those badge displays REALLY required to be so long? It feels like one big advert.

It takes too many menu option clicks to display the important information about the car - I don't care that the cars in the front menu are coloured in Prancing Elephant Yellow - I want to know its BHP, RPM, and drive and weight.

The car choices are moderately nice but where's the customization? A small glimpse of the tools we can use to enhance our cars would've been nice. As it is, you're stuck with stock cars.

Then we come to the races - the only decent view is the in-car view (without the steering wheel etc). The view from outside and behind the vehicle looks warped - your cars seem ENORMOUS compared to one that is level with you and look massive compared to most track widths. Something wrong with the perspective....?

I think it's because the tracks look flat and under-detailed compared to the cars. I can't describe it but the cars feel completely apart from the track. Forza and NFS make the cars and races feel more..together. I'm not sure how to describe it!

What percentage of the game is this version? 20%? 30%? 40%?

I expected an awful lot more.

Online play is poor - it's more like a game of dodgems than a precise racing simulation.

What's with the bizarre collision penalties? I was racing the Daytona Speedring and came up the outside of 4 cars (which incidentally were teleporting from one side of the track to the other...!?!?) and they appeared next to me. Next thing, I'm facing the wrong direction with a 6 second collision penalty? WHY!!?!?

Why do you sometimes go straight through a car with no collision..yet other times the slightest nudge sends you wildly arcing on a looping skid?

Very very underwhelmed.

Also, is the position you take at the start line in online games random or dependent on track record etc?

However it is decided, I soon get bored of starting 12th out of 12 cars :(

ROFL, sorry but i thought the whole point of a console is to skip the part "installing" why you need to install ps3 games but on xbox 360 you don't?

Not sure, I'm guessing It's due to the slow read speeds of Blu-ray?

Only some games do this. Mostly Capcom games.

OP: Did you buy off PSN or buy BR?

Anything you download off of PSN needs to be installed, but that only makes sense.

not really. If I download something off XBL I don't need to then install it.

While I can't really comment on it as I don't have a PS3, I'd think having to install a game on a console would bug me. I want to be able to put it in as soon as I get it and play. Thats part of the reason why consoles are attractive to gamers IMO.

What about game demos? No? (as opposed to XBLA stuff)

I don't really download anything off of Live.

If not, oh well, but if we're about to turn this into a raging "I can't wait x amount of minutes for a game install" then I'm outta here.

I don't like Capcom eating up 5GB to play DMC, but I'll be damned if you'll find me pulling my hair out waiting 5/10/15 minutes for something to install off of PSN.

30 minutes, if it does take that long, is a bit excessive - Definitely a little long. Can anyone else who has prologue confirms it takes 30 minutes? Like ACTUALLY 30 minutes, not 5-10 minutes that "feels" like 30 minutes.

As for the topic posters opinion, bummer (N), sounds like you don't like GT.

Well, I'm installing it now and it's been 15 minutes since, looks like it's at 80% or something. Really disappointed with having to install this. And for some reason I can only control game menus with the steering wheel (controller 1).

I guess Prologue is Prologue, I was expecting more. But I thing I will skip this and buy GT5 when it comes out with these bugs fixed. Though I never liked 1 bump and your car's all over the track thing in GT.

It's a "glorified demo" people... let's not be too nitpicky.

GTHD kept me busy for a while (for what little was offered) - and this should hold us over until the full game is released. It really is beautiful and fun to play.

Complaining about a game install seems more like a personal preference issue. I for one prefer it with games like this. It seems it's either that or the forums fill up with "GT takes forever to load - how lame! What a piece of garbage!" posts.

I'll add my opinion :)

I have the GT:HD demo, GT5 Prologue Demo (was available on the Japanese store last year), the Japanese GT5 Prologue and now the European GT5 Prologue. Only the European Prologue needed installed, it took about 10 minutes on my system, the update failed the first time, retrying it took about 10 minutes - I guess the servers are fairly busy, so, I'll excuse this. No issues with the clock or anything like that.

Bad things:

The online system is awful. Cars appear to be placed on the grid based on performance - slowest cars at the front, fastest at the back. You're pretty much best selecting one of the slower cars, as most people seem to be intent on playing bumper cars. Cars seem to fade in and out of existence at random, can cut across the grass seemingly without penalty - however, try the same and you'll get a penalty. Sometimes other players can thump into you and accelerate off - yet the slightest touch of another car incurs you a penalty.

You'll run out of new races long before you get enough money to buy what you REALLY want - the F2007...

Races are FAR too short.

No car tuning is available.

No damage - it's still possible to bounce off cars and walls to get a nice boost.

Good things:

Graphically it had moved on from the Japanese Prologue, the framerate seems to be much improved and the car detail seems a good bit better. The lighting is much improved, most visible on the London circuit as you go from light to dark between buildings.

The selection of cars is much improved, and more diverse.

Anything you earn now will be available to you from day 1 in the full GT5 (apparently).

You can see huge progress from the the 4 versions I have.

The AI drivers are no longer anywhere near as stupid as the were, they'll block you, pull into your slipstream and don't just parade round in a line.

The AI is a lot more difficult to beat than in previous versions.

The fact that this is released now, along with the other releases means that the developers have a year to tweak a lot of peoples gripes in GT5.

While several people bemoan the cost of Prologue, it will pass a substantial amount of time, considering 3 trips to the cinema would cost the same, it's not that expensive.

To the OP - I'd hazard a guess that you're looking at 5% or less of the scope of GT5.

And another bad thing - no way to play with just your friends - only randomers, as far as I can see..

nothing off Live needs installation. XBLA games, Demos or xbox original games.

Again, I don't own a PS3 so it does discredit my opinion to an extent, and I don't think it would matter too much. However, part of the reason I like consoles because I don't have to wait for installs. So while it wouldn't stop me getting a game, it would be annoying and would probably mean I would think less of the game, and be less likely the recommend it to friends.

Only the European Prologue needed installedt. The japenese version needed installing too. Go on, delete all the content and run it again... :p

installing games is rubbish, i cant believe that we actually have to do it, wasnt dmc4 like this aswell. May avoid prologue and get final if thats the case, might get prologue if price drops to a tenner or something :p

So I just spent a few ours with mine and some of the things I've read here are true indeed. Framerate seems better than the japanese demo, although it still suffers from it alot more than I had wished.

The game took about 15 minutes to install and the update took about 1 hour mainly because of around 10 failed attempts at doing so.

Online sucked so far, random people in matchmaking, connection failed during races, lots of lag with cars popping out of nowhere, etc. Has a lot to improve here.

On the other hand split screen is super fun and worked ok.

The suzuki cappuccino sucked as usual.

Because developers can't count on there being a hard drive on a 360.

Also, to speed up read times because of the Blu-ray.
