popisdead uk
I'm disappointed that developers for the ps3 are using the hard drive space, good job there's not a lot of content on the online store otherwise I might not have had enough room to install it. ok rant over, looking forward to finally playing it. The HDD was made part of every single PS3 for this very reason. Sony must have known this would be a preferred method by some of the dev's so they made upgrading easy, and most importantly so it wouldn't end your warranty. Its also a nice bonus that 2.5" SATA drives are cheap, I paid ?60 for 250GB. Bargain.

popisdead uk
And the space on the blu-ray discs are there for a reason as well!! ;) Its quicker to read from a SATA device than the BR drive, thats the reason. ;)

offroadaaron
not really. If I download something off XBL I don't need to then install it.While I can't really comment on it as I don't have a PS3, I'd think having to install a game on a console would bug me. I want to be able to put it in as soon as I get it and play. Thats part of the reason why consoles are attractive to gamers IMO. thats because Xbox is just your average gaming machine compared to the ps3 which is a nice media/gaming machine, I mean what does xbox have? actual what does sony have that xbox 360 doesn't? sony managed to fit the PSU inside the black box, sony gave us a nice hd drive (blu-ray), we ps3'ers have bluetooth and wireless and this all comes with the ps3. oh and ps3's don't explode to often either! rofl

Personally anyway, I'm a gamer. My first priority when buying a console (be it a N64, PS1, dreamcast, PS2, xbox, 360, PS3 or anything) is the games and the gaming experience. Wifi, bluray etc are all extra's. Nice extra's yeah, but not that important to me. On the other hand, being able to play a game right away without having to install it is important to me as a gamer. And yeah, while MS did make a mistake with the 360 in terms of reliability, the newer models seems to be much better. And MS have extended to warranty (something sony never did regarding the DRE issues with the PS2 - not as widespread as the RROD issue, but widespread nonetheless). Should we removed PS3 topics from Neowin's gaming section and put it in media instead?

Ricardo Gil
thats because Xbox is just your average gaming machine compared to the ps3 which is a nice media/gaming machine So the ability to run games without having to install them means it's an average gaming machine? Right, because having to install games is so leet and only awesome gaming machines can do it... poor 360, it can't even install a game. actual what does sony have that xbox 360 doesn't? As for Sony I don't know (lot's of things?), but if you mean PS3 just go read the millions of threads about it. We don't need any more of this "My console is better than yours" crap, ok? Coldgunner
Installing games don't bother me, been doing it on PC for years, gives me a chance to take a dump and grab a drink before I play. HDD upgrades are dirt cheap anyway.
ynnoj
Is it true you can't race against PSN friends at the moment? My copy arrived last night. I managed to get a few races in (my dad is a GT addict ) and I was impressed.

Rumour is the patch will come out around the time of the US release.
EnzoFX
The thing with installs...... Wait, let me back up. The thing with consoles, is that they're a simplified form of gaming. I.e. Being to accomplish something in the ease of the living room couch. Simple Interface, etc... The way Sony packages its DL games/demos, DOES indeed require an installation. Though the 360 may not do this, the drawbacks in comparison are moot. You still can do it all within the comfort of the living room. It requires a handful of minutes at most, and an extra push of the X button. It is nothing like installing a game on a PC... So I'm sure most people don't mind, and again, a moot point. It requires a handful of minutes at most, and an extra push of the X button. It is nothing like installing a game on a PC... So I'm sure most people don't mind, and again, a moot point. I just read the thread through and felt inclined to join the forum just to join in the 'install' debate :) The bottom line is the PS3 uses the install feature for a singular very good reason. It's the fastest way to play a game by far. Back in the days of cartridge consoles it was the other way round, a cartridge holds game data on solid memory modules, similar to flash memory its quick to transfer data but has limited capacity. Limited capacity is the key reason for now having to use media such as DVD and blu-ray. The problem is that this type of storage cannot be accessed as fast as your console can process the data, they become a bottleneck. Xbox gets away with it because DVD tech has been around long enough to be just about fast enough, although the longer load times in more complex games highlight the problem. Blu-ray cannot be read as fast as DVD because it requires a more accurate scan due to the tighter tolerances of a high capacity disc. In other words as games get more content rich (high quality textures for example) then the PS3 is better future proofed than anything else. It will be able to cope with more and more ambitious sized games without hitting a data transfer bottleneck. So by choosing blu-ray (PS3 biggest selling point...) sony effectively lost the option to avoid installing game data to the HDD. For the same reason there is no way that the next Xbox will be able to avoid doing the same. Although its more likely that future consoles will feature solid state drives rather than traditional HDD's This will allow large games to load at a cartridge speed. My desktop PC loads a race driver GRID track in less than a second, thats installed on a SSD drive and there is no faster way to play games available.
